At the end of my third wk. on Atkins, I weighed in the evening (at the same time as last week) and, although I had stuck to the diet, I had gained two or three pounds. Could this be water weight attributed to hormonal fluctuations/water retention??? It was very discouraging to see, because I had stuck to this diet very well. Did not eat anything I wasn't supposed to. Can anyone relate a similar experience??? My period is not due for another week yet. thanks!!!! Susieq109

On a personal note. I have gained 5 lbs one week before my period for the last 40 years. So I know where you are coming from. I know this is true and still get discouraged. That is usually when I go off a diet. I started Atkins 2 months ago and was real happy with it. I lost a lot. All of a sudden I went back to my old ways because I had gaind my 5 lbs. I can't seem to get it thru my head that this too shall pass.

Yes, I've had it happen as well. Thankfully about a week after it happens I usually lose it and a couple pounds extra. Hope this happens to you!

Don't use the scales for short term results. Most women experience water retention each month. Pay attention to how your clothes fit instead. I have lost only 8 lbs, but I have already dropped 1 dress size. I am exercising too. Don't quit either, your body remembers everytime you diet, and it works harder to hold onto what you have each time you try again. We are a product of thousands of years of survival and our bodies are very efficient machines.

Just a thought...Mornings are the best time to weigh yourself. Throughout the day, you're drinking, eating, and processing food so your weight can fluctuate. Pick up a full pot of coffee and see how heavy it is.
