Hi, I'm about 8 wks. pregnant and have been low carbing for over a yr. I'm wondering if it's really safe to do while pregnant, do we get enough calcium and should we be getting more whole grains? I asked my dr. and she said not to deprive my body if I feel like I want it I should have it, but I don't want to undue all the good I've done on low carbs, of course I also want to be sure the baby gets what he/she needs too! Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Jimmi I'm prego too (for the forth time!) and never did lo-carb while pregnant before. I have gained 50 lbs with each previous pregnancy and really don't want to go there again. I don't look good fat. Songndance!

I also went with "what you think you body needs you should have".....after being low carb for a year, and gained 30 pounds in my first trimester...that I KNOW isn't healthy. From what I've read, there's nothing wrong with eliminating sugar, bread....etc. while pregnant...just use common sense. I've also read that you should definately stay above 65 carbs a day...and stay out of ketosis. I'm due mid november too....how is everything going?

Hi there. I was searching for a board on this topic. My husband and I are ttc right now and we've been doing atkins for about 4 months. I love this way of eating and don't want to undo all the positive effects....here's what I've learned: --You can't be in ketosis while pregnant. that's not healthy for the developing fetus. --You don't need to eat white bread/rice/etc or sugar at all. You can substitute the low carb products here, and splenda is just as good as real sugar if you ask me! --The easiest and healthiest way to increase your carb intake without getting constipated is to eat more veggies and fruits that are low on the glycemic index--berries mainly! What do you guys think? And does anyone want to email? mine is mrshepzikat@aol.com. Thanks!

I actually researched the Atkins website a bit - I'm ttc and the last time I was prego I ate so many breads that I gained 30lbs real fast. I didn't want to gain that much that fast again. It says to follow the Life Maintance Plan. 90 - 120 Carbs a day +. It tells you how to get your folic acid through strawberries and peanuts etc. and also calcium through broccoli etc. check out the site and type in pregnancy (www.atkins.com) It gives you a very good guide line. Good luck to you all
