The Danger Within
"Mal, we got a wave from Badger coming in. Wanna take it?" Wash called over his shoulder to Mal, who was rummaging through a locker in the back of the bridge.

"Yeah, patch him through."

"Yes, sir," Wash replied, hitting a few choice buttons.

A fuzzy Badger appeared on a screen in front of him and his sleazy voice filled the cockpit. "Evenin', govnas."

"Badger!" Mal said with a slightly jaunty voice. "What can I do you for this fine day?" Mal, of course, did not trust Badger one bit, but he might have a job. And they were in serious need of some shiny money.

"Got something for you to transport, if you're interested. You'd be taking it to an Alliance planet, though I'm sure that won't scare ya off now, will it?"

You had to hand it to him. Badger knew exactly how to push Mal's buttons, and mentioning that he might be scared of the Alliance was precisely how to get Mal really into a job. It worked again.

"We can be landed in Persephone in a few hours," Wash offered, pulling a navigation chart up on a panel screen.

"Lovely," Badger said, overhearing their location. "See you soon then?"

"We'll flag you when we land," Mal said, agreeing, and he turned off the communication link. "I hope this goes real easy."

Wash only chuckled.

Re: The Danger Within
Serenity was speeding along on autopilot toward Persephone at a rather quick pace. It came as a bit of shock when they reached it in only a matter of about an hour. A loud sound echoed through the corridors, alerting the crew of their fast approach. A cool female voice notified them that autopilot would be disengaged in five minutes time.

Wash nodded to Mal and the two set off for the Bridge to set Serenity down. Kaylee and Simon headed off to the engine room, even though Kaylee didn't need Simon.

Within a few minutes Wash executed another flawless, well almost, landing. They landed in the docks of persephone.

Mal and Wash headed back to the kitchen area as most crew began to do. Jayne sat there looking up.

"I ain't wakin' Zoe up.."

Re: The Danger Within
While Zoe slumbered on, everyone else went to work with their own tasks. Wash was busy checking the Mule out, making sure it would work properly and had enough room to haul something, in case the job was something that they needed to transport.

"You boys play nice now," Wash said, waving to his crewmates.

"Always do," Mal said, and he and Jayne set out toward Badger's, wondering why he hadn't responded to their hail.

"You don't reckon it's a trap, do you? A setup?" Jayne asked, his finger tracing the smooth curves of his holstered gun.

Mal stopped in his tracks, and looked at his hired muscle with awe. "You know, that's actually an intelligent thought passing out of those lips of yours. Same thought occurred to me, but I don't think Badger'd call us down here for somethin' lest he actually had somethin' for us to do. It was kinda out of our way, and he knows how I get when I have to make trips I don't have to." He grinned his cocky little grin, as he turned down the familiar alleyway leading to Badger's hideout. "Plus, if it is a setup, it's probably by the Alliance, and I ain't got no qualms about taking my inconvienance out on them."

Jayne followed along dumbly behing Mal, quite pleased that Mal had called him intelligent. They stopped in front of Badger's door and took in a breath. Anything could be waiting for them on the other side of that door. A trap? A job? Didn't really deter them from going inside, though.

Mal pushed open the door slowly, without knocking. Everything looked normal. Good. It wasn't a trap

Meanwhile, Kaylee, Simon, and Book scuttled around the kitchen, preparing their snacks. Kaylee had found a large bucket that they were using to pile the food into, so that they could carry it down to the bay.

"Is River coming up?" Kaylee asked brightly, looking around.

"She was in the stairway last time I saw her. She seemed to want to be included. Perhaps one of us should go and invite her?" Book said, in his thoughtful voice.

River, however, had of course moved on from the staircase, and since the two men had left the cargo bay, she was pondering a way to get around Wash. She was sneaking slowly down the stairs, hoping he wouldn't notice her.
