CHAPTER 4#
“So how was your first day around the farm?” Ashleigh wanted to know, breaking up the difficult silence after the terrible news of Whitebrook and the awful couple.
Lindsay finished her glass of chocolate milk. On Sundays, she always had chocolate milk for dinner and nodded, “It was great thanks!” she said, enthusiastically.
“Oh good,” Mike told her, but Lindsay could tell he wasn’t really actually listening to her. She could tell he was too focused on the bigger situation.
Ashleigh, clearly could tell too. “Mike,” she whispered, and gently put her hand in his lap. “Are you alright?”
Mike, took her hand and didn’t say anything.
Lindsay looked up from her dinner plate and starred blankly at her grandparents.
“Lindsay?” Ashleigh asked, softly.
“Yeah…” Lindsay responded, trying not to focus her eyes.
“Do you mind if Mike and I just quietly talk for a few minutes. It wont be for long, it’s about Whitebrook matters,” Ashleigh said, obviously a bit embarassed of having to shoo Lindsay out of the room.
Lindsay, abruptly, stood up. “No, no” She began. “Don’t worry in the least! I know how it must feel. I’m okay with letting you two be alone for a while” She didn’t want Ashleigh or Mike to feel bad and that they had to provide her entertainment.
Ashleigh leaned over to hug Lindsay. “Thanks so much! Also one of the stable hands went into town and bought us all a container of icecream. You’re welcome to it, dear” she told Lindsay, sympathetically.
“Yum,” so Lindsay let Mike and Ashleigh talk for awhile and she cleared her plate and cup into the dishwasher.
After, putting them away and helping herself to a scoop of icecream and was tiptoeing to the porch, she heard them talking.
Only a few faint words like “….yeah…ok….it’s going to be so tough….what about the horses….why us?…..Christina?….”
This sure is mysterious, Lindsay thought. But not quite right either. She glanced through the window and saw them both sitting by the table with stern looks on their faces.
Lindsay heaved out a sigh and quickly tiptoed away before they’d notice her eavesdropping on the scene.
She had planned to meet one of the must trusted stable hands, which she was looking foreward too. Apparently she was going to sit on a horse, Lindsay hoped he’d be nice and gentle. She hadnt ridden in years and it was only light.
“Hey Lindsay, over here!” it was to Lindsay’s surprise, Curtis.
“Hey,” Lindsay said, smiling. “How come you’re here?”
Curtis shrugged. “I just came over to see you…”
Lindsay raised her eye brows. “Really? Okay, then” she tucked her hair behind her ears.
“Yep,” Curtis responded. “C’mon lets’ go find Jane(she’s the stable hand which was going to be teaching Lindsay) I think I know where she is,” he outstreched his hand.
Lindsay wasn’t sure rather to take it or not. After all what would Aaron say. What would Alyssa say when she found out Lindsay was actually going to be riding?
“You coming?” Curtis asked her, with a funny look upon his face.
Who cares, they wouldn’t know anyway, one voice in Lindsay’s head said. But another objected, You? Holding hands with a barn guy? Eww.
Too much was going on, horses, Whitebrooke closing, her grandparents upset, the couple, Curtis.
Lindsay shrugged and took it, Curtis smiled at her and she returned it.
They approached a horse’s stall. In it was a beautiful bay. Lindsay had to admit, that he or she was very handsome/ pretty looking for a horse with a long flowing tail and mane. Lindsay noticed the name plate said ‘Sam’ Plain old Sam. How boring, Lindsay thought.
“This is Sam,” Curtis told her. “He’s real gentle”
Lindsay nodded, “He’s nice. Hey! How come you know everything about the horses here?”
Curtis grinned. “Oh. I guess it’s cause I work here and my ‘rents are good pals to your’s. Kevin Maclean. I’m his son. Christina and him were good friends when they were younger. I live on a farm not to far from here, actually. I’m gonna be helping Jane who is working with Vanity at the moment. She asked if I wanted to help out because she’s going to be awhile yet,” he paused and glanced at the clock. “About 15-20 minutes, which will be enough time to tack up and groom Sam”
“Cool,” Lindsay told him and grabbed a brush from the stall door.
Curtis followed her in with another brush and they began to work together on grooming Sam, which Lindsay decided was going to need another name.
As she worked, Lindsay caught site of Curtis’s cute, soft blue eyes. They locked for a moment then Lindsay looked away. She began to groom Sam’s neck, and Curtis put his hand on top of her’s.
