Kevin studied the gelding. "I guess I'll go talk to Mel about it." With that, he turned down the aisle.
Jeanie watched him leave the barn and grabbed the green nylon halter and lead outside the Thoroughbred's stall. She made sure no one else was in the barn and slipped inside Sting's stall.
The gelding kicked out and pinned his ears at Jeanie.
"I thought we had an understanding?" she asked the gelding as she moved swiftly towards the stall door. She opened it and stood in the middle of it, swinging the halter and lead at the gelding, moving him around the stall.
Finally, after five minutes, she got the halter on Sting and was leading him down the cement aisle. She gave him the whole lead rope to walk, but he insisted on walking on top of her. She shook the rope at him as she walked. The horse suddenly stopped and reared in the aisle, almost banging his head on the roof.
"Steady!" Jeanie called up to the horse, turning around and spreading her arms out in a soft way. "Whoa, boy ... steady."
The horse landed on his front feet and eyed the lead, standing away from Jeanie.
She laughed. "It's not going to hurt you, Sting," she promised the horse. "Ready to go?"
She turned around and started back down the aisle. The horse stayed away from lead. Jeanie smiled to herself.
