The Joke...
....is that Reverb don't accept Demos pretty much full stop...
They're more of a distribution deal then a record company as such and will generally advise artists that labels are useless and you should just go out and do-it-yourself!!!
Labels
Reverb has developed more of a policy of obtaining solicited demos - i.e. demos given to us by lawyers, bands we've seen and liked, and friends or people with ears we trust. We no longer take unsolicited demos - i.e. bands mailing demos to us out of the blue. We've found this works much better for us.
As far as us recommending bands to take the pure independent route and releasing material on their own, you bet! If a band has the infrastructure, management and specific smarts and determination, this is ALWAYS the best 1st step for a band. Frankly, it is just extremely hard for a label or anyone else with a modest budget to break a band into the market (and into the $$). Often independent labels will help bands with this first and incredibly hard step with huge expectations of success. In reality, it often takes a couple of albums to reach that stage.
As a label, we are definitely not more of a distribution deal than a label. Unless you count a "distribution deal" as an entity that provides PR, Radio promotion, Marketing, Distribution and, on occasion, tour support. It is extremely hard for bands to get distribution on their own, no question about it. That is "one"of the areas where we and other like minded labels add value. You may not walk away from a Reverb release with fame and fortune (well... you might), but you will certainly walk away with massive press coverage (national and international), good tours (if you're willing to work hard), a music video, a song or two in a movie, tv series or commercial, and good distribution.
Lazy? Don't think so. We're just increasingly selective with who we put our energy, passion, money and time into...
Office
Reverb still has PR, marketing and distribution functions in Ireland. The main head quarters is now in Portland, Oregon. We also have an office and representatives in Los Angeles that service tv/commercial/film placements among other things. Thanks for inquiring.
