More Pettit Track Records Broken as Skaters Vie for Spot on World Cup Team
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (October 22, 2005) – The U.S. speedskaters demonstrated that they not only have fire in their bellies but their sights set on Olympic glory after an impressive second day at the 2005 Fall World Cup Qualifier at the Pettit National Ice Center.
Casey FitzRandolph (Verona, WI) blazed to a new Pettit National Ice Center track record in the 500 meters and an overall victory in the same distance with a finish time of 35.56. Joey Cheek (Greensboro, NC) and Tucker Fredricks (Janesville, WI) rounded off the medal podium with second and third place finishes in Saturday’s race. Kip Carpenter (Brookfield, WI) finished fourth in the race in a time of 35.94 followed by Shani Davis (Chicago, IL) in 36.14. Cheek placed second and Fredericks and Davis tied for third place in the overall standings.
Earning spots on the 500 meters World Cup team are Fredricks and Davis. They will join Cheek, Carpenter and FitzRandolph who already pre-qualified.
Davis, coming off an amazing new track record in the 1000 meters on Friday, set another track record Saturday in the 1500 meters in 1:46.44. Chad Hedrick (Spring, TX), paired in the heat with Davis, finished second in 1:47.02. KC Boutiette (Tacoma, WA) finished third in 1:48.87.
Joining Hedrick, Cheek and Derek Parra (Orlando, FL), the three already pre-qualified in the 1500 meters for the World Cup team, are Davis and Boutiette.
On the ladies’ side, Jennifer Rodriguez (Miami, FL) dominated the ice with a first place finish in the 500 meters in a time of 39.01. Amy Sannes (St. Paul, MN) finished second in 39.73 and was the overall winner in the distance with a total of 79.230 points. Elli Ochowicz (Menlo Park, CA) finished third in the race and second overall.
Sannes, Ochowicz, Chris Witty (West Allis, WI) and Eva Rodansky (Naperville, IL) earned spots on the 500 meters World Cup team. They will join Rodriguez who already pre-qualified.
Rodriguez took another victory in the 1500 meters with a finish time of 1:59.97. Maria Lamb (River Falls, WI) finished second in 2:02.49, followed by Witty in 2:02.52. Catherine Raney (Elm Grove, WI) finished fourth followed by Sannes’s fifth place finish.
Lamb, Raney and Sannes have earned spots on the 1500 meters World Cup team. Rodriguez and Witty were already pre-qualified. The ladies’ 3000 meters and men’s 5000 meters will be contested Sunday.
