Here's chapter 1!!!
Chapter One
"Hallo, ist mein Name Carmen Carrière. Ich bin 16 Jahre alt und habe ein 21 Einjahres Schwester genannte Alice. Ich bin eine Cheerleader an meiner High School. Ich liebe zu kochen, schreibe, kaufe, SpielVolleyball und..." I whispered as I wrote my introduction to the essay I had to write for German class. Being a junior in high school is hard enough, but add being on the volleyball team and cheerleading squad makes it even tougher. It's also tough when you come home to your mother saying, "Carmen Carrière! Why can't you be like your sister Alice?" everytime you get a B on an assignment. I sometimes think that I was adopted instead of being born to my mother because I really don't fit in with my first class, snobby family.
"Carmen! Your sister is home!" I sighed as I got off of my bed and went downstairs. My sister, Alice, had just gotten home from Harvard, where she is studying to be a lawyer.
Fun, I get to put up with Miss Perfect, I thought as I slowly walked down the stairs. Alice was a perfectionist; everything had to be neat.
Before I walked into the kitchen, I went straight to the bathroom. Putting on the light, I looked at my image in the mirror. My emerald green eyes sparkled, and my honey colored hair still looked neat in it's french braid. Sighing, I walked out of the bathroom, muttering, "I hope I look alright."
Walking slowly into the kitchen, I was greeted by Alice. "Oh look at you!" Alice smiled, tossing her blonde hair, her blue eyes sparkling. "You've grown so much!"
I rolled my eyes at her comment. "Yeah, whatever you say." Walking past Alice, I went to the fridgerator. Open the fridgerator, I grabbed a can of Pepsi, and then leaned against the counter. "I need to call my boyfriend tonight. He must be wondering what happened to me."
"You have a boyfriend?" Alice questioned, clearly surprised.
"Uh, yeah. Ryan," I replied, walking over to myr purse that was sitting on the counter. I had left it there alone with my cars keys when I got home from school. Taking out a picture of Ryan, I gave it to Alice. "
That's Ryan, my
boyfriend."
Alice looked at the picture. "Cute," was all she said.
I rolled her eyes, grabbing the picture out of my sister's hands.
Damn it, she never says anything nice to me! I walked out of the kitchen with the Pepsi can in my hand, and I started to run back upstairs when mother caught me by the arm. "Carmen!"
Already angry at the fact that I don't fit in with my family, I turned around and looked at my mother. "What?"
My mother's blue eyes sparkled. "Did she tell you?"
"Tell me what?" I pulled her arm from her mother's grasp, and crossed my arms.
"Your sister is going to be queen!"
"Queen of what?" I said a little be too loud, irritated at the fact that she wasn't allowed to go back to writing her essay.
My mother's eyebrows rose. "Queen of Mardi Gras!"
I blinked, and dropped the Pepsi can I was holding onto the cream colored carpeting.
Queen of Mardi Gras? I repeated it to myself a few times, but it didn't sink it. My mother was Queen of Carnival a long time ago, and so was my grandmother. My grandfather was King of Carnival only three years ago. I shook her head. "No, she can't be!"
My mother shook her head. "I know that you're jealous because Alice will be queen, but you should be proud of your sister. She has worked hard to become it!"
"Well maybe I'm not!" I yelled as I ran up to my bedroom, slamming the door shut.
________________
"I hate having Alice home. I hate the hell out of her. I hate it," I said that night on the phone to Ryan. "She acts all so perfect. Alice is such a bitch. I hate being the one that is pushed away."
I could hear Ryan sigh on the other end of the phone. "Carmen, you've got to realize that your sister will always be in front of you. She's the oldest child in the family, plus, she's going to be Queen of Carnival. You can't tell me that your parents aren't proud of her, and you should be proud of her too."
Spoken from my boyfriend, the only person in the world next to my best friend, Alyssa, who always sides with me. "But I'm not saying that I'm not proud of her! You don't have any clue how it is to be the younger sister of Alice Carrière!" I sighed, knowing that I wasn't being fair. "This is really getting to me. I really think I should be living with a family that I actually fit in with. Like your family or Alyssa's family."
"No, you would miss your family," Ryan said softly. "But I wouldn't mind being your brother. I've always wanted a little sister to pick on."
I smiled. Ryan could always make me smile when I felt bad, or was angry at the world. That's what made me attracted to him, next to his heartmelting brown eyes and smile, and sense of humor. "Maybe your right. And no, I get enough of this picking on sh*t at home, thank you very much."
Ryan laughed. "At least I'm not perfect."
"You are to me," I replied, smiling to my self but laughing on the outside. "I need to get go and finish my essay. I'll see you tomorrow, ok?"
"Ok, same here. Bye Carmen."
"Bye." I hung up the phone, and went to get my unfinished essay. "Only 248 words left to write. Fun."
