Tea and a Job
January 5, 311

Tea

Sei shoved his hands down deeper into his pockets. As disheveled as the city around him, he wasn't entirely sure how much time had passed since his arrival, nor that the entire sad state of affairs wasn't somehow his fault.

Eyes on the pavement, dirty blond hair fringe hiding much of his face, he also wasn't sure that he wouldn't run into Squall, or Evan, just around any corner.

He still wore the same white shirt, now washed many times, that he'd died in. His tie, was royal blue, loosely knotted, hanging around his neck as if all he needed to do were just push it tighter, straighten up, and move onto his class. In some part of his mind, he was just waiting to get to his class, see his students, explain the bit of military history he'd been planning for them.

The soles of his shoes had worn thin. He'd walked from one end of the city to the other. Nights spent pacing from the outer edges to the outer edges and he was no where near finding his way home. Home had left him.

He knew this.
He knew it.

Why he stopped, right when he did, he wasn't sure. Lights maybe. Maybe it was the red head who'd just gone in before him. Maybe it was the sound of people which drew him.

As soon as he stepped over the threshold, into the tavern, he lifted his head, green eyes mapping out the crowd, the exits, the entities most likely to be threats and - suddenly, as if some secret muse had whispered it to him…. he wanted a job.

Not that he'd ever had one before. First there had been academy, then shame, then he'd been Squall's pet problem, and even when he'd been a professor, that had been just an extension of the academy, so no real jobs had ever been his to list as accomplishments. Selling art on the streets didn't count. That was just for enough gil or food to get himself walked into the next sunrise.

He licked dry lips, a strong hand combing back fine pale hair. There had to be someone around here he could ask for a job. Maybe just washing up, or pouring drinks, and he was sure he didn't want a job breaking anything, or anyone.

Re: Tea and a Job
“Ready to hand the apron over for a while Krysm?” Crystal’s voice was sad but hopeful at the same time, always leaving the promise that The Blessing would be here for the owner when she returned from her travels. Krysm had done so much for the community since she’d opened her bar here a few months after the war and had charmed people like the Elder herself had not been able to. Now, some unexpected business and some much needed relaxation time had brought Krysm to the point of asking Crystal if she’d watch over the empty building while she left. Though the older elf with the air of secrecy around her didn’t say too much about where she was going, the auburn haired woman wasn’t sure she wanted to know where exactly she was going. Preferring to think she was visiting pointy tipped eared grandchildren, questions didn’t exactly flow freely from Crystal’s lips as she sat at the bar watching Krysm getting ready to step to the stage where the band usually played charmingly, getting ready to make the announcement that this would be the last night for the Blessing for quite some time.

A pair of gray leggings had somehow found their way onto Crystal’s legs tonight, cutting off at mid calf as she turned on the stool to watch the band play their final song. She wasn’t used to wearing leggings under her clothing, but the air had simply been too chilly to not wear something with the skirt that ended around three inches above her knee. Somehow, with her height, it always seemed to look shorter than she thought decent for a woman of her age, though she only looked to be in her mid to late twenties. When she was on the streets of Genil, she was Crystal Dinaia, an Elder and a person of a respectable position. She dressed accordingly when she was there, business clothing and pearls, but here, she was someone else entirely. Crystal was the young woman in the Blessing that she’d been longing to be for more than three hundred years. A long sleeved white shirt made out of t-shirt material fell to her thighs, covering the waist band on her denim skirt, the bottom hem ragged from working in the garden in it. Rather than zipping, it buttoned up with sweet little bronze buttons, worn into their button holes well. Her gray pumps had been forgotten somewhere after she’d come in the door, probably hiding under the bar or a random table.

Crystal’d spent most of the afternoon at Kentaro’s manor, finding footholds in a friendship she still didn’t understand. Coming here to talk to Krysm, a nice lady who had become something of a confidant, she’d been dismayed at the closing of the Blessing. It was her frequenting spot, close to home, yet an atmosphere that made her forget who exactly she was. Or maybe, that was just the alcohol. She’d left his house giddy almost, revived and relaxed, but finding that when she returned home, sleep was the furthest thing from her mind. The other Elder had said things that she couldn’t begin to decipher alone. Simple girl talk had been needed, but she’d been greeted with much more. As she lounged, elbows on the bar and her legs crossed in front of her, she imagined the windows of the Blessing in the Flask darkened and the doors barred. She patted the keys in her pocket and shook her head slowly, her coppery-red hair falling and rearranging itself in little ribbons from the movement. Things like this were inevitable.

Re: Tea and a Job
Sei ran a hand over his mouth, sort of cupping the lower half of his face, as he stood there, just stunned. The sound of people chattering, breathing, dreaming - just standing there, he was sure he could about feel the people around him wanting things, hoping, and in all living, this was like pouring warm water over his frost bitten soul.

The closed door behind him couldn't explain where he'd been or what he'd been doing since he woke up in this world, still wearing what he'd died in. The hand from his mouth moved down to touch the tie that still hung loosely knotted around his throat, still waiting for that moment when he'd be ready to tighten it up and walk out the door. The tie, the now ruinously wore white shirt, slacks that could only have been made from some academic hoping never to need an independent personality again, these things were his mask. Such a common little charade, tie and smile, nod and snark, and he could fool the day into believing that he wasn't the most lonely man in many worlds.

The open space of chattering people suggested an explanation for the misery that had followed him into death. Movement. Breathing. The people around him seemed so alive now, even amidst the drama and caution in their words and faces, they were moving towards some future that they had to get to before they'd see it.

Shaking, his fingers worked to loosen the tie. It was, he suddenly remembered, the last gift he'd received from Squall. as the slender side slipped through the knot, it was as if the very last hold of their relationship withdrew, the last penetrating stroke of submission retreated as he pulled the knot open.

Squall had not loved him, at least not more than Squall loved many other things.

Waiting, holding on, tightening that stupid tie ever day, teaching classes he didn't belong in, standing up straight, and the tears he hadn't cried, those were because he hadn't breathed. When Squall turned away, the truth was in the next breath and, Sei just hadn't taken it. Years of his last life, how many of this life, he didn't know, but he'd been holding his breath, waiting for the moment after when Squall turned back around.

His throat filled up with cotton. Jaw tight, tears, warm, too warm to be from his own frostbitten soul, filled up his lashes and broke down a lean face. Tie, limp and spent, hanging from one hand, he wiped tears from his chin with the heel of his hand. A deep breath filled his chest, opened his lips and he stood a little stronger, not the rigid straight of a professor waiting for a commander to return to him, but of a blond bastard boy who could kick his way through anything.

Dropping the tie on a table between a couple of questionable characters, gender indistinct, but not the kind of people one would invite to a dinner party, he moved towards the red head. An aura of power radiated from her, suppressed, perhaps, but non the less, both she and the people around her knew she was extraordinary.

Tears still like streaks of silver where he hadn't wiped, like overflowing soul, he moved right up to her table, smirked, or smiled, depending on perception, he bowed slightly. "You remind me of a red head I knew once. He was a spoiled rotten bastard of a demi-god who thought he could fix everything, and did his best, most of the time," Sei paused, tilted his head in the other direction, "You're not him, are you?"

There was always the chance that she would be an incarnation of Da'neal. As much as he really wanted to kick Da'neal's ass, he could use a friend much more. Memories like, worn shoes that one kept trying to throw away, reminded him that Da'neal had incarnated as Daniel and fallen in love with Evan, who was dead, but then Sei knew he was dead too. Hell. He'd carried a child within himself. Nothing was impossible with sufficient technology.

Re: Tea and a Job
Crystal’s eyebrows shot upward at the question that caught her off guard, had she not been balanced she would have fallen off the stool entirely. “I know a few spoiled-rotten demi-gods myself, but I can’t say that I have ever been one before.” Her eyes examined the man before her carefully, searching for a glimmer of familiarity in him but found no one that she knew. The only thing that seemed familiar from his appearance were the streaks of tears that traveled down his cheeks, shimmering and glimmering in the overhead lights of the bar. Those, she knew well. She’d allowed many tears to fall lately in many places, in front of many people, even though she didn’t like for others to see her emotions. Being a leader meant being strong in the face of adversity, but what did she know about being a ruler now? Someone in a governmental position first had to have a collection of people to rule over and as of now, The Council had nothing in the way of community trust. Sitting up straight, Crystal scratched her head softly and brushed her hair back from her face.

She had once known all the words to say to people who had arrived in Genil after their deaths, her voice full of compassion and an honest willingness to help them in any way she could. Now, though, she was almost terrified to regain the strength it took to ask the question, to hear the response, and to help them heal. Fidgeting with the keys in her pocket, she pulled them out and set them on the bar behind her, the keys had been digging into her leg slightly and had cause her a little mild discomfort. Crystal decided to take the leap back into her position for at least a few moments. The room didn’t seem too angry or too crowded tonight, perhaps she wouldn’t hear a hiss of disapproval if she was only trying to help someone who was merely a victim of circumstances. With a glance at the man beside her, she gestured to the stool next to her if he was so inclined to take it and smiled softly, regaining her almost queen-like air for a mere moment. For a split second, she felt like Crystal Dinaia of the Elder Council again, and she let the memory stay in tact. “Sit down and I’ll pour you a drink - it’ll be on the house. Krysm has to use up what she’s got left here anyway, she’ll be closing down for a few weeks after tonight. There’ll simply be no one to run the place in her absence, the people of Genil have their own agendas to tend to.” With that, Crystal slipped off the stool and headed behind the bar, searching for clean glasses. “I’m Crystal, if you were wondering. So, what’ll it be--… ?" She hadn't yet caught his name.

Re: Tea and a Job
"I'd like ice tea, if there is any," Seifer said. "I'm sad to hear she's going away. I was going to maybe, well, ask for a job. I'm Sei, well, I'm Seifer Almasy, but my friends call me Sei, and I'd be honored if you'd call me that too, please." Seifer moved to follow her.

It felt as if it had been forever since he'd talked to anyone. Even before his death he'd been more ghost than man. Since after the war he'd had trouble remembering things in order, or remembering things at all. Standing there, he couldn't say he wasn't just lost. Squall and their children were so far gone and distant. He didn't know who Crystal was, though he felt like he should ought to. In that moment, his face as relaxed, green eyes innocent as a child's, heart wishing so quietly that Seifer didn't even hear it.

"Why are you sad," he asked, impulsive, without guile. "Can I help?

Crystal stopped as she set the glass on the bar and tilted her head to the side. These were the people who had made Genil possible, strong hearted men and women that were willing to let the past lie where it was, no less important but merely dormant as they moved on toward a new future. She admired the quality as she saw tiny shadows of the past move through his eyes and smiled softly before turning to fill the glass with ice.

“Lovely to meet you, Sei, I only wish it were under happier circumstances. Krysm said she’d be leaving for a while and closing the Blessing down merely because she had no one to run it. If you think you’re up to managing the place for a while, I could.. Maybe get her attention before she goes up to make the final announcement.” Her voice was a little rushed, a little bit excited in the same instant, she got this way when she saw an opening that she could help fill and a person who could use the place to be. “I’m sure we can all work something out.”

As she turned around, the question hit her and she frowned only slightly for his sake. People in Genil didn’t want the Elders to push their way back into the lifestyle of the community, nor did they exactly take kindly too them. This man, this Sei could not have been here very long because if he had been, they would have spat her name at him as if it was vile and bitter in their mouths. The smile she gave him was hauntingly sweet, a flash of teeth that turned the plain looking woman into a beauty for a mere ephemeral moment as she spoke softly, “I’m sad only because I chose to stay that way, I suppose. Sei, I honestly thing you’ve helped me already. People of the Coun-.. People like me aren’t necessarily considered human anymore in this town. At least you’ve spoken to me like one. Now, let me go catch Krysm before she goes up.” Crystal hopped away from the bar for a moment after passing his iced tea across the counter and approached the older woman, speaking into her pointed ear softly.

Sei wasn't sure what to do or say. She was being very kind. He reached for the tea. Could he run a tavern? It wasn't that different than managing a class of stubborn students. He… and his memories failed him, slipping away like ghost of shadow mist.

It would be a place to belong though, if he could mind this place for someone, be helpful. That was the best thing he could imagine right then.

Re: Tea and a Job
After speaking with Krysm for a few moments, the two women moved away from the stage and Krysm could be seen nodding and asking questions before nodding again. Both the Elder and the owner of the Blessing had looks of concentration on their faces before both broke into smiles and Krysm turned into a back room as Crystal returned to the bar, this time sitting next to Sei on the stools that were there. It was a moment before she spoke as she tried to find the best way to phrase her next words, she didn’t want to come on too strong with her offer. He always had the right to refuse her, to turn away from the job if he so chose and she wished to make that clear. “Krysm will be away for three weeks, tops. She’s asked if you would like to live in one of the rooms in the inn and continue to run the Blessing while she’s away. She could really benefit from the proceeds and has agreed to pay you a fairly hefty sum for “bar-sitting” while she’s away when she returns. After that, she’s considering hiring you full time to attend to the bar while she does most of the administrative things. That is, if everything goes well and is up to par when she comes back. For the time being, I’ve got copies of the keys to the side door of the bar and the front door of the inn itself that I’ve been given permission to give to you if you accept.”

Crystal looked down as she dug in her pocket, her hair falling over her face for a moment. Her eyes were a bit dark as she turned to Sei. “Realize, however, that my neck is on the line in this agreement and any ill intentions will be recognized and defused. I used to be a powerful person in Genil and my voice still holds some weight will people, especially the law of the region.” The Elder grinned suddenly as she held out a ring with five keys on it by the loop, “But I’m really quite good at getting along with people so everything should be fine.”

Re: Tea and a Job

Sei wasn't sure if he were offended or delighted. She was going to trust him and threaten him at the same time, but well, that wasn't any thing really unusual. He'd had his own war, in his time, and come home the evil, mistrusted bad guy, even though he'd only done what had seemed right and good. It almost made it seem like home that he wasn't fully trusted. His smile was broad, generous, green eyes full of both kindness and mischief. "I'll do my very best. Show me around, ne? Show me how you want the books kept?"

He took a drink of his tea and secretly sent good wishes to his Squall, where ever he was, wishing his ex-husband a good life and good future. Letting go of his past life just a little more studied the red head next to him. She wasn't anything like Da'neal, not really, and probably a lot less dangerous. "It's real nice of you to give me a chance like this."

Re: Tea and a Job
“Everyone starts somewhere..” Crystal looked at the floor of the Blessing as she thought of the reason why she was so open to those who came here without much more than a memory of the past. She had always been the one in the Council to welcome the new arrivals and set them up with a place to stay, somewhere to belong because in her first waking moments in this place, she’d been so very alone. The feeling of being abandoned and utterly alone was something that Crystal had never been able to shake, even in all of her years of being here. This was the reason why she never hesitated to help anyone who needed it, using the fullest extent of what power she still had to try to pave a way for someone else. Sometimes people took her as coming on too strong but, naturally, that was just her style. Always had been just like Crystal to barge into anything head first and never look back until she was finished.

Grasping underneath the bar as she spoke, Crystal pulled out a large leather binder that Krysm kept all receipts and tabs for regulars in. As she explained the billing system, she wondered what had caused her to start to feel some semblance of normality. Perhaps it was her very desire to move out of the rut she had gotten herself into after her captivity with Fedafyr and the war that had destroyed her city. She’d been out of practice with humanity for quite some time now, but somehow it felt like her soul was returning to her. “So.. Sei, what did you do for a living before you came here?”

"I was a trouble maker," he said, smiling, "Actually, I was a professor of tactical and forensic art, with the occasional martial arts class when Zell or Questis couldn't be there. I've even been known to stand in for Squall," that last word held more emotion, the sweetness of that which probably had never really been. "He was the headmaster of the school we were at. We both studied there as children, training in most military arts. Within that training came budgeting, discipline, and skills that could be put to managing a tavern. I also raised three kids."

With that confession, he needed a drink. Even if it was only tea, it was still cool as it filled his throat, preventing the heated crush of grief that threatened him. Images of their faces scatter shot through his memory, so quickly that he'd seen all of them, from innocence and smiles, right up through the separation, and even a flash of Evan's funeral before the ice tipped away from his lips and he set the glass down.

Time was a damn bitch. It was she that knitted bones and rendered hearts.

"What did you do before? What kind of things to you enjoy doing, if I may ask?" He smiled at his companion, turning back to the present. His smile even grew a little bigger, lopsided and mischievous, green eyes showing none of the pain and bitterness that had just passed through them. At least she wasn't Da'neal. Gods the trouble well meaning red heads could cause.

Re: Tea and a Job
“So you were a teacher? With three kids? That’s an almost unimaginable task…” Crystal poured herself a glass of tea as well as she observed the man. He seemed gentile enough, honest even, as he spoke about his past. It always interested her to hear about other places, other worlds she assumed, because almost all of them were unlike the others. It had always been her obligation to keep the names of the worlds of arrivers to herself though, even if said places matched up with others she’d heard about earlier. Some people who arrived here wanted a fresh start, somewhere where the past didn’t matter and the future was unlimited and she respected that wish. She didn’t honestly know what she would do if someone from her world and time was to approach her, if she would admit that she was the same Crystal from that time so far in her past.

The next question stunned her for a moment because it was so close to her own thoughts. She sucked in a bit too much tea and proceeded to cough after swallowing it, then went for another sip to calm the raspy feeling in her throat. What had she truly liked to do in the past? “Before I came here, I suppose I was doing much the same thing I’m doing now, except in much smaller doses. I was an attorney, but I was on the wrong side of the lines. I defended criminals and despite the fact that I proved a few innocent men innocent, I proved more guilty men innocent.” She set her class down and her hand rubbed some of the condensation off onto the bar. As the water droplets moved down the clear material, she wiped her hand on her skirt and smiled almost secretively, “But that wasn’t what I liked to do. I got an adrenaline rush out of it, yes, but what really caused my soul to soar was to paint. Watercolors primarily. Something about the serene value that just made it worthwhile.”

"Painting can be listening to the soul of life and breathing it into life on paper," he nodded. "Maybe sometime we can draw and paint together? I really like drawing more though. Is there an art supply store here? There must be, right?"

Confusion flashed through his green eyes and for the briefest second he was lost, innocent of knowledge, trusting, back to the basest root of who he was, but the moment only lasted just a breath, much less than such moments used to last. A blink and his eyes were back to the adult and guardedness of rather powerfully built blond man sitting in a new place with a very charming companion. "Sorry. It's like, sometimes, that I've been walking through this city forever, half lost in what maybe I should have done and only occasionally thinking about what I ought to be doing. It makes time linger like clock that never quite hits the hour. I think having something to do again is going to make things much better for me. So? Is there an art supply shop around here? And does this place have a full on kitchen?"

Re Woot! Art!
She didn’t answer him directly, concerned about the change he’d seemingly undergone for a split second. Crystal reached out her hand and was about to touch his shoulder when he turned and began to speak. Awkwardly, she replaced it at her side.

Crystal’s eyes were sympathetic, she knew his troubles as if they were her own. Until recently, she’d felt like a ghost in her own body, confused about what to do or where to go, or even how to survive. Psychosis and random other ailments had put her into a place she couldn’t understand. Smiling softly she nodded but said nothing, afraid that a spilling of emotion in the presence of other citizens of Genil could end in disaster. She hadn’t allowed them to ever see her at half mast, nor would she begin doing so now. “Things have to get better now or at least some time in the future. The gods wouldn’t leave us limbo now would they?”

“There is an art store, right down the street from here actually. The residential artist around here was the one who suggested that it might be a good business many years ago and suddenly, they began to stock things that I adored. I found some water soluble pencils there a while ago, they’re quite good for sketching out water color paintings because they fade when water hits them. The Blessing does have a kitchen, a rather nice one, in my opinion.” The Elder moved toward a door nestled between the shelves of liquor behind the bar and pushed it open slightly to reveal a rather expansive kitchen, tidy and clean as Krysm always kept it.

"Oi! This is a lovely kitchen. I can make bread here," he said, rolling up his sleeves. He wasn't going to make bread now, but the white school teacher shirt just felt funny to him, out of place. "You're sure you guys trust me? I mean, there's no reason not to trust me. I'll do my best."

Crystal glanced at a clock as the man rolled his sleeves up and remarked about bread. It was nearing the midnight hour and she, herself, was beginning to feel the effects from it. She couldn’t imagine anyone making bread at such a time, but as he turned around, she realized he was just getting comfortable. Propping herself against the large double sinks in the kitchen, she noticed how relaxed her muscles had gotten from the hot springs at Kentaro’s manor earlier that day, and wondered how tense they had been before the hot water. The past few years had been difficult for her, as they had been for everyone in Genil, and luckily she was finally waking from the stupor she’d been concealed in. People were beginning to treat her as a person again, but perhaps she had been the one treating herself like an animal in the first place. Trust, trust was a serious issue for Crystal after the happenings of the past, but she felt nothing evil in this man, perhaps mischievous, but not evil. “Until you give me a reason to think badly of you Sei, I’ll think nothing but the best of you! I don’t ever expect to think badly of you, to be honest..”

"When is your friend leaving and does she have a list of responsibilities she'd like me to take care of while she's gone?" He did wonder if he'd be able to make some bread soon. It was really about the right time to get it started, if he was going to raise it twice and have it ready for people getting started on their day. Though this was a tavern, not a restaurant and he was sure there were people who made bread around here, probably much better than did.

"What time does the place open? Does it serve dinner?"

"Krysm will be leaving tonight, I believe. I'm sorry that this is such a short notice. I don't necessarily have a list, but the other employees here will definitely help you out if you're standing in for Krysm. The Blessing that I've seen, has always opened the Inn section of the building with the rising sun, though there is usually a watchman at the front desk in case there are late night travelers that need a room. The tavern itself usually opens an hour after nightfall, the band after all are just men with other day jobs that need time to tune their instruments and such. Also, it gives Krysm a little break in between fixing dinner for the Inn's guests and such."

Crystal nodded slowly, "The Blessing usually provides dinner to its guests and even the people who come for the bar. There's a large dining room to the left when you enter the Inn itself. This place is really a godsend for Genil. People who felt alone for so long can come here and for a moment, feel like life might step straight again, if you know what I mean?"

"The white city fell without her. Peace revolved around her, but when the mother left her children, they destroyed one another... She'll never forget that she left--she'll wear the chains of the martyr as she pulls the world's weight behind her, still thinking she's not doing enough." Morrigan Aensland

It sounded like big job, with lots of responsibilities, and Seifer was excited about the possibility of keeping busy and having goals. "Thank you again for giving this chance. I'm going to take the best care I can of this place. I'll make bread. I could even get it started now, so it'll be ready for breakfast."

He set about investigating the ovens. He smiled happy to be in the moment and not fighting off thoughts of Squall. This was a new life, really starting and the storm gray eyes of his lover did not glare at him, willing him into silence. The stiff turn of a starched collar did not make itself a wall between him and a once welcoming smile or nod. No, Squall was not commenting on anything about his life. He was dead and Squall was elsewhere. After a slow breath, he turned to Crystal with a warm smile.

"So, you like bread? I've always liked cooking. What do you do for a living?"
