Sig help...
So I made a new sig, sort of...I think I'm starting to get the hang of blending pictures together, but I still suck at text. Would anyone be so kind as to help me? Here's what I have so far:
I don't know if it's because my fonts are too plain, or I just don't know how to do any good text effects, maybe a little bit of both, but everything I try just ends up looking really out of place.
Anyone bored and want to give me some pointers? Or if ya happen to have an idea that is too hard to explain but you can show me, in the empty space on the right, I would like to fit in:

What program are you using? I do all my text overlays in Photoshop, so I'm most familiar with that. I can do the text for you, but you won't learn anything that way. I put text on a separate layer and use the various blending/warping options, maybe a gradient fill of some kind, drop shadow, stuff like that...
I use a really old version of Photoshop, so might not be the same, but after I type something, then if I want it shiney and 3d-ish, i use Layer Effects (i think) bevel and embose.
and a drop shadow or an outer glow added to that helps depending on the colors of the font vs. the background.
I'm not half as good as most people here, but here's my site: www.circleoftrust.org/GUILD_SIGS.htm
if you want a specific effect I've done, let me know and I'll tell ya what it is.
my sig that i'm currently using, uses an inner shadow and an outer shadow. same with Mo's. I think I used bevel and embose on Tuulah's though.
and think about borders... do you even want one? some people don't use them by style-choice. I used to do a 3D border, like Freddian uses above this post, for a while.
To do that, after you're done with your sig, save as a .jpg, then pull it up again, select all, copy, paste and then go to layers, effect, bevel and embose and it will make the whole sig look like a 3D plaque. Very nifty and I don't know why more people don't use it. I used it for about 2 years, so I'm currently trying out the regular lines and transparencies that most people start off with. Being self-taught, sometimes you go a different way first. but I think the 3D look is way underused.
Undoubtedly one of the best places to get tutorials on anything Photoshop.
Make sure you're original in your work. I'm not saying copying and pasting backgrounds isn't OK, but you get more bang for your buck if you make your own. Your sig looks good, and it can only get better. Good luck and keep it up.
Re: Sig help...
The 'metallic' look is just a gradient, with a very slim middle, so it's like this
dark shade...........light shade.........darkshade
Make the light shade very narrow.
Then, mess with the light direction, angle it until it looks good on the font you've chosen. I just tweak it around until I like it.
You can do a lot with the various blending options, like Cymry is doing with inner shadows and inner glows and whatnot. Just mess around with the settings and see what happens. You'll no doubt come up with your own favorites.
