Scared?
Hey, guys. This is a long story, but hopefully some of you guys will be able to help. I fell off my horse, Monkey, three weeks ago. He spooked while we were cooling out on a loose-rein, and I basically just flipped over the side of the saddle when he shied. My instructor made me get back on him, and he was incredably nervous for the rest of the lesson. And, he wouldn't go past the spot on the rail where he spooked. The thing is, at my barn, after someone falls, an instructor is supposed to get on. My instrcutor didn't, insisting that Monkey only works well with me and that if anyone else rode him, it would just make it worse. So, the next time I rode, I was assigned him again. He had been ridden a few times that week, and everyone had something 'wrong' with what he was doing. (An example someone said is - shifty; not turning. And he actually bucked someone else off.) Well, first of all, when I rode him, I was really sore. So, maybe I wasn't riding my best. But he was perfect. After a jump course, I stayed in a 2 point position to slow him so I wouldn't get hurt, and, even though he's a Thoroughbred, he did slow. (Oh... I love him! ) But, anyhow. Then, I rode him yesterday. The person who rode him before had fallen off, and then he was really bad for me. So. Do you think he just gets really nervous and scared when someone falls? Please tell me what you think. My riding instructor is worried about him, too. Oh, I forgot to add - Monkey is a very sensitive horse, and he is an ex-racehorse; he only likes certain people to ride him, and those certain people stay on him every week.
Well, he sounds like an odd horse. And I have a feeling that he probably does get scared when someone falls off of him. I really don't know what else to say....
But she’s cool like a soda can sittin’ on ice
Always orders sushi, only eats the rice
...
I got a sweet gig rakin’ in the cash with karaoke
I get the crowd goin’ when I sing the hokey pokey
...
Well, you know what is really odd? I don't ride him anymore. None of the students do. The only people that can ride him now is the barn owner, and the barn manager. I'm not allowed to ride him unless it is he really needs to be exercised or someone falls off him and I am down by the arena when neither Kate or Leslie (the two people allowed to ride him) aren't there. I'm going to miss him so much. But, at least I am the first one Kate or Leslie will go to if he needs to be ridden. I asked why I wasn't allowed to ride him anymore, and Kate replied with: "Anna, hon, he's a dangerous and odd horse. I just think it is better if we keep our barn the safest it can be." And then she went on and on about how she knew I would miss riding him...
ah
Ah, Monkey sounds like a horse we own, Icy, a 3 year old thoroughbred right off the track.
She's kind of like that, only, she gets really nervous around males, and she's that way because when she was racing, she was abused by her trainer and groom. And she's still doesn't like males riding her, not even my brother(who she sees everyday). Only me and my mom can ride her without anything happening(well, she threw me off last week, causing me to break my wrist but anyway).
Maybe Monkey was abused when racing or was in a bad accident that caused someone to get hurt. If so, then a lot of work will have to be done so that he doesn't get all nervous.
Some horses are just like that. They get nervous and antsy when ridden, and spook and goof off when someone falls.
I don't know what else to say, but be patient and hope for the best.
