RE:New here, Mom desperate need support, 1st public Meltdown
Hi-
I'm new to posting on a message board but I am looking for other Moms for support. I have an 18 month old son whose pediatrician (who has a 21 yr. old son who is autistic) gave him a preliminary diagnosis of PDD. We are going to Johns Hopkins, Kennedy Kreiger, in the end of June to get him assesed. I have been working with the Infants and Toddlers program, and it has seemed to be helping, but he has recently seemed to have regressed. I am a young single MOm who moved back home with my family as soon as I had him b/c we had nowhere else to go. I am very grateful for my parents and their help, but It is hard and I am very overwhelmed. To top it all of his Dad is not empathetic and has continued in his battle for custody, regardless of what has been going on with Kevin, or what is in his best interest.
My son has started biting me, pulling my hair and scratching my face. Yesterday he started biting himself. His spinning has gotten worse, as has his obsession with anything round. I left a store in tears today because he had his first real public meltdown, and bit me and was back arching, I couldn't even put him in the stroller. People were looking at me with looks of disapproval and judgement. I couldn't believe it. I am very patient with him and try to be understanding to his sensory overload, but thses people were ruthless. I was so sad and felt so alone. I am hoping someone has had an experience like this with this kind of behavior in a public place? What do I do? I have to go out!?|I
Thanks

Hi

You know I deal with the same things when I go out with my son but he's 3. He bites (well trys to) pulls my hair and screams very loud when he's upset and for no reason he just does it sometimes out of the blue.

When he does it in public it's so hard to control him but I find a way and sometime it's just hugging him until he calms down.

How are things getting is it still hard to go out.

Jennifer

~Autism Video...A Must See~
This is a true glimpse of life with a child with Autism. Awesome video that will touch your heart and raise your awareness, a must see for everyone whether or not your life has been touch by this disorder. The video is 13 mins 20 secs. www.autismspeaks.org/medi..._LoRes.wmv

As a former ABA Therapist for the Autism Society I urge everyone to take the time to watch this video. It is such an accurate view of what these families face on a day to day basis.

Awareness brings forth both compassion and understanding......

In Friendship,

Re: ~Autism Video...A Must See~
I'm new but I noticed some these postings are months old. As for the mother whose son had a public meltdown for the first time let me give you some hard earned advice. DO NOT TAKE HIM TO WAL-MART. That is too much stimulus for their minds to handle. Any large well lit store with overhead continuous music and announcements will most assuredly cause a meltdown. And do not feel you have to tough it out. If you can not bring someone with you to remove him when the melt down starts bring something that will occupy his attention. A favorite toy or something. But take him into smaller stores at the least busiest time of the day. And don't be ashamed to tell them he is autistic. People need to know. And we the mothers are the only ones that will speak for these children.
