(OT)Captain k'alaa's Corner for November, 2006
The Turnabout Turnabout
In the earliest part of my life, I was rather a "Star Trek snob". The only science fiction I would watch on television or in the movies -- with rare exception -- was Trek. Always Trek. However, as time went on and my kids got older, I realized I wasn't the only Star Trek fan in the universe (!).
In 2002 I went to my first convention, ConJose, the WorldCon set in San Jose, California. I met SO many other fans, many of whom started loving science fiction the same way I did, by watching Trek. However, I did meet a few others, who were not Trek oriented. I met a man who was dressed like Tom Baker, and I said hello to him. I informed him that my husband to be (Admiral Mudd) was a huge Who fan, and he had taught me some things about the Doctor. This man, who was an American, said he had been a Whovian since the mid-Seventies when they started showing Doctor Who in Chicago (the city he was from). He also told me something that opened my eyes to the many other branches of science fiction fandom in existence. He said "I had never watched Star Trek until about eight years ago (2002 time). Completely by accident, I saw the last half of a Star Trek episode where the Captain's mind is exchanged with the mind of a woman mad doctor. I have tried to find that episode again ever since, and have seen about a dozen of them (TOS) so far. It changed my mind about Star Trek."
This blew my mind! Before I met Admiral Mudd, I had sorta "heard" of Doctor Who and K9, but I had never really taken the time to ever watch it. After this, I made time!
Over the last four years, my appreciation for Doctor Who has soared. Mostly because my lovely husband is such a Who fan. However, a corner of the reason I changed my mind lies with other fans, who are open-minded enough to embrace other forms/stories/universes of our shared science fiction heritage.
