Offensive People Online by Amy Lynn

I haven’t been in a chat room in years. Yet I’m still amazed how many offensive people online seem to find me and add me to their list. In the Lounge Lizard days, it was easy to spot an off-kilter person and warn others about him or her. Hopefully, people listened and were able to fend off such annoyances. But when using something like MSN Messenger or AIM, you don’t have the privilege of seeing things you saw in a chat room. Thankfully, I have the ability to sense danger coming. I thought I’d share my experience.

Firstly, they always check out your profile. And if of course you don’t have a picture in your profile, this complete stranger will ask for one. This always makes me laugh, because why would a complete stranger want to see my picture? And, why would I want to see a complete stranger's picture? Chances are it’s not even him or her. I didn’t know what my love interest online looked like for six months of our relationship. And when I did see, it didn’t matter, as I was already in love with what mattered to begin with, his personality!

Now after the picture phase has ended, they move on to voice. They want to hear what you sound like. Well, being a voiceover artist, I, of course, have loads of samples on my site. So I can send them there. This bothers me though -- that someone would want to hear my voice when they aren’t looking to offer me a job. But samples aren’t enough to these people who are searching for the next person to bother online. They want more. Which of course I deny them, because people pay to hear my voice. I’m not about to voice chat a complete stranger claiming to be interested in me, asking for photos and voice chats online. After putting a stop towards all the red flags waving before me I ask “What’s this person going to ask me for next?” When I ask this, it always catches them off guard and they usually see that I’ve talked to others online before, and I will not be playing any kind of silly game. I’m not looking for a relationship online, nor offensive people, yet people who are looking for one always seem to find me when I least expect it.

Once they are done with messaging you, offensive people often move on to harassing emails. Often, these are kids with entirely too much time on their hands. I, of course, block and report as spam those harassing emails, but sure enough I always seem to get more. It’s sad when you have to block friends email addresses because they share the same name as your harasser.

So I guess we have a choice, to hide ourselves from people that may find us and be blessings to our lives, or put up with all the annoying, aggravating, or (worse) harassing people out there. I myself, prefer to put up with these off-kilter characters, because I met a friend in 1996 that I still have to this very day after having dodged around some not-so-nice people. Had I not continued to make friends online, I would have surely missed out on one of the best educated, well mannered friend's in the world. Who just so happens to be a Trekkie. :P

A Word From The Founder

A Doctor Who Fan Speaks Out, part 1: Will the spin off work?

On 22nd October 2006, Doctor Who's SECOND spin off will begin. "Second?" I hear you say. "What do you mean, second?" Indeed, most fans wish we could forget Doctor Who's first spin off, back in 1981. It was of course K9 and Company. And look what happened to that! It never got past the pilot stage.

So what is there to stop the new spin off Torchwood ending up going the same way that K9 & Co. went? Well, nothing really. All we can do is wait, wait and hope.

But does Doctor Who need a spin off? In my honest opinion, yes it does! Why? Coz the main show, in this case Doctor Who, would wither and die. But does it need TWO spin offs? Or is it a spin off one too many? The other new spin off is reported to be Sarah-Jane Investigates. This show is set to be made by CBBC, the BBC's Children's department.

I think it'll work. CBBC are known for making great drama, so Sarah-Jane Investigates is in safe hands. But, what if...

What if it was down to you to make the next spin off show for Doctor Who? Who or what element from the shows history would you use? Daleks? Cybermen? How about life for Zoe after she was returned to the Wheel In Space?

I'd like to see a series where we follow the adventures of a former companion like maybe Jo, or Nyssa or Ace. Or how about something really different? How about a series in which we follow a squad of Cybermen or Daleks as they travel through the universe wiping out the rest of the galaxy. But what if one of the Cybermen/Daleks emotions had come back?

Whatever the future may have in terms of spin offs for Doctor Who remains to be seen. For now, we have Sarah-Jane Investigates and Torchwood. Let's see how they run before we start crying out for even more.

Admiral Mudd founded the AMAFSR. He is a rabid Doctor Who and science fiction fan. Part two of A Doctor Who Fan Speaks Out will be in the November, 2006, Doctor Who Anniversary Edition of our Newsletter.

Reviewer's Retreat

This is me and Captain k'alaa, and in our own words, this is how our day at Collectormania 10 in Milton Keynes, UK went.

Admiral Mudd : The first thing we saw when we got there was a Return of the Jedi biker scout storm trooper, and an Episode II storm trooper. After saying hello and taking a couple pictures, we moved to the main hall, where most of the celebrities were and the main dealing hall was. I got to speak to William Daniels (Knight Rider, St. Elsewhere, more). He signed two pictures for me, one of himself, and one of the car KITT. I chose to spend the rest of my day going round the dealers tables, where I left much of my cash. k'alaa met most of the celebrities. Here's her story:

Captain k'alaa : copdewa8blechta09cat&&&&!!!!
Um...

Admiral Mudd : err...calm down dear, take a deep breath, start again...

Captain k'alaa : err...blarrrgh! BRAIN FAN EXPLOSION....

Admiral Mudd : No, no no! Come on, tell the nice members how your Day went, please??

Captain k'alaa : DUDE, Imeterr MET somereally nicepeopleandgottheirautograoph, errautograpps, err...AUTOGRAPHS...

Admiral Mudd : (sigh!) Maybe I should tell people...?

Captain k'alaa : NO NO wait wai t wait!!! err, no, um yeah (sigh).

Admiral Mudd : (chuckles merrily). Okay. As you can tell, k'alaa had a great time. After standing in line, she managed to meet Alice Krige, who very kindly autographed our special edition Star Trek: First Contact DVD. She then got in line and talked to Burt Kwouk (You Only Live Twice, Pink Panther, Doctor Who, Banzai! ), and had a real nice talk with him. Peter Graves was next, who was also real polite and sweet. She then walked around the dealers tables, finding several special Doctor Who things I had not seen yet, including a gorgeous Seal of Rassilon badge that she bought especially for me and not for the collection, as well as many Star Trek collectable cards and photographs...

Captain k'alaa : YEAH! That!

Admiral Mudd : LOL...by this time I had bought a number of Doctor Who action figures, including Captain Jack, a couple cybermen, two krillitanes, and a flexible (!) TARDIS. k'alaa had in the meantime gone back to try to find Marcia Wallace and Ernie Hudson, having just missed them several times. We went to lunch, then k'alaa got Marcia's autograph (she was also very nice), and finally, after trying five times...

Captain k'alaa : GULP! (sniff!)

Admiral Mudd : After trying five times, she got Ernie Hudson's autograph. He was also very nice to her, and let her take a picture of him. When she got back to me at the dealers tables, she had, well basically...

Captain k'alaa : CORE MELTDOWN DUDE

Admiral Mudd : (chuckles merrily yet again). Err...yesss. It's SO funny to me, because I have never quite seen k'alaa so...well, so...

Captain k'alaa : blargh AHHHHHHHGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Admiral Mudd : Overwhelmed? (Wry smile).

Captain k'alaa : (Points and shakes her head yes).

Admiral Mudd : Yessss. So you see, all in all, we've had a great day, came back with loads of autographs, loads of pictures, loads of Doctor Who stuff, and loads of information about independant dealers.

Captain k'alaa : (in her Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure voice) : EXCELLENT! (In her Monty Burns voice) : EXCELLENT! (In her Cyberleader voice) : EXCELLENT! (In her Clueless voice) : EXcElLeNT......

Admiral Mudd : OH, and we bumped into two Daleks and members of the Dalek Builders Guild.

Captain k'alaa : (muffled) Momphy pomphy schompf....

Admiral Mudd : So, until next time, have fun!
