Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
Lindsay series
Prologue

“Mom?” 13 year old, Lindsay Reese called out. She was in her room packing for the ‘supposedly trip of a life time’
“What, hon?” Her mother, Christina Reese called back from her own bed room.
“Can you come here, please?” Lindsay asked, tucking her photo album and a couple of jeans into her big suitcase.
Lindsay, heard her mother sigh but then abruptly came to her room.
“Yes, Linds?” she asked.
Lindsay looked at her mother. She looked a bit stressed- perhaps she hadn’t really had much sleep. She was wearing her sweat suit and a bit of an annoyed expression.
Lindsay flew back onto her back. “Why do I have to go?” she mumbled.
Christina sighed again. “Sweetie, we’ve been over this. I want you to get a chance to know where I grew up and to get to see you’re grandma, Ashleigh and grandpa, Mike. Maybe we’ll even get to see Melanie and Jazz,” Christina sat by Lindsay’s feet.
“Oh,” Lindsay whispered. “Why can’t you come?”
“I told you this too, I’m going to spend sometime with Parker Townsend- Oh my gosh! Parker! He’s coming to drive us all to the airport. Oh my god! I’m not even ready,” Christina jumped up, alarmed. She glared at the clock. “One moment, Lindsay,” she said and then ran out of the bedroom.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
“Grr…” Lindsay grumbled. All Christina seemed to care about at the moment was her horse, Star and her boyfriend, Parker. She also wouldn’t stop nagging Lindsay about going to the farm where she grew up.
It was only for a month after all, and Lindsay didn’t want to be a baby like she had to admit was being one now.
Lindsay liked her townhouse in a small town where all her friends lived like Alyssa, Katie and Aaron. She liked her school and how the mall and everything was so close without being super busy.
Although Lindsay could tell Christina didn’t like it at all. Christina boarded her two horses at a near by farm. Lindsay couldn’t quite get how she was so addicted to them. Lindsay liked horses and went to the barn sometimes but it just wasn’t her favorite thing.
Christina wanted to make Lindsay happy, herself happy and Parker all at once. It wasn’t quite working, for Lindsay that is.
So Lindsay was stuck getting packed to go to the airport well Parker and her mom had a romantic trip by themselves. But of course, Christina had to take her horses with her. Parker liked horses too and they often rode together.
Lindsay didn’t know any boys who liked horses.
Beep!
The sound of a horn honked. Christina, rushed into Lindsay’s room. This time she was wearing a trendy skirt and sweatshirt, plat form shoes and a tad of blush

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
Christina almost NEVER wore that kind of stuff, but lately she had been.
Oh well, Lindsay thought, nothing wrong with that.
“Come on, honey,” Christina cooed. “I’ll take these bags and you take those ones,” she led the way down stairs and too the car.
Parker was standing beside his car.
“Oh wow! If it isn’t my favorite people,” he joked.
Lindsay took her bags from Christina and got in, she starred as Christina and Parker’s lips met as they greeted eachother happily
A few seconds later, they got in.
Lindsay pouted and took out her pictures of her friends. She sighed the entire way while Parker and Christina in the front laughed, held hands and exchanged stories.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
CHAPTER 1#
Lindsay pushed her head back against the head rest. She took out a packet of bubblegum and put it in her mouth. She closed her eyes and listened to the music, that the airplane was playing, quietly
Not two hours ago, she had been with her mother but now Christina was long gone, holding hands and kissing boyfriend.
Now she was on the way to Kentucky where her grandmother, Ashleigh and grandfather, Mike lived and their niece, Melanie and her boyfriend, Jazz. Actually Jazz and Melanie were married, she didn’t quite know.
She did now that Ashleigh had been a professional jockey. She still lived on a farm called Whitebrook and still had horses but she didn’t race as often as she had when she was younger.
Lindsay wondered about the farm.
Would she have to muck out? Clean tack and feed the horses? She hoped not. Lindsay was there for the sight-seeing mainly, but little did she know she was going to be riding and spending as much time with horses as she could.
Still, would she rather be with Christina and Parker. Nah. She wanted her mom to have a nice, relaxing time.
Parker was nice. But he wouldn’t be the perfect dad, Lindsay decided. Actually, Lindsay didn’t even know her own dad. Christina had said he had walked out on her, suddenly at least seven years ago. Lindsay didn’t remember him at all, however. She had seen some pictures of him and Christina during a number of occasions. Like, when Lindsay was being born, when they were first going out but only one or two of them all together.
Not all of Lindsay’s parents had a mother and a father. Aaron didn’t. Aaron was sort of like Lindsay’s boyfriend. Although they didn’t do anything not until they were older, they decided. For now they just hung out at a burger place and in the park. Aaron especially liked soccer which he generally played.
Lindsay bit her lip. She’d miss them so much. After all Alyssa, Katie and Aaron were her best friends.
Lindsay wondered about Parker and Christina’s holiday. Apparently they were going to be staying in a very nice hotel together at a hot, warm place. Then they’d go and see this big horse show and the jump-off. Although Lindsay didn’t know much about horses, she did know about some things. After all, Christina was a pretty good ‘eventer’ and jockey, as well was Parker.
Lindsay giggled, thinking about a boy in those tight pants. She knew they’d probably ride themselves on romantic trail rides along the beach.
“Hello miss,” a voice interupped her thoughts

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
Lindsay looked up. “Yes?” she asked.
The person was a flight attendant carrying a tray.
“Would you care for a drink and a snack?” The lady asked.
Lindsay nodded. “Sure. Can I have a rootbear and hum…a chocolate bar, please?”
The lady smiled at her, “Sure honey, anything you’d like. We have only a few seletions left however of chocolate bars-they have been a big hit!” She tucked her short brown hair behind her ears then rolled the cart down the aisle.
“That’s okay,” Lindsay told her. “Anyone is fine!” she watched her go.
Everyone seemed to be calling her honey. Why? Lindsay shrugged then got up and went to the washroom.
When she was finished she looked herself in the mirror, a girl with blonde hair and green eyes starred back. Her face had a somewhat sad, interesting expression. I look like I’m in grade 5, Lindsay thought, angrily. She was short, unlike Christina who was actually pretty tall. Interesting, Lindsay thought.
After she got back to her seat, her drink and snack had arrived. Lindsay happily muched and drank them while she wondered about Kentucky then dozed off.
“Excuse me, this is your piolet, David Alexander,” a loud deep voice called, waking Lindsay up. “We are about to prepare for landing so if everyone could please put their seats in the upright position, store all hand bags under the seat infront of you and fasten your seatbelt,” he went on. So Lindsay did so and listened well another man translated it in Spanish and French.
“The weather in Kentucky is nice at around 70 Fairenhight and about 20 C. A nice summer, spring today with a low of 65. Thank you and I hoped you enjoyed the ride,” the piolet finished off.
Lindsay closed her eyes again and hugged herself tighly as the plane began to swerve downwards heading for the run way.
A couple minutes later, she heard a large boom. They had landed in Kentucky airport. No turning back now. Lindsay had arrived and was there to stay for several weeks at least.
When they’d fully landed, she unhooked her seatbelt and grabbed her bags and followed a young couple off the plane.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
“Lindsay! Lindsay! Over here! Lindsay Reese!” Someone was yelling.
Lindsay whirled around crashing into a grumpy old man who yelled, “Watch it, kid!”
“Sorry,” Lindsay whispered and stood on her tiptoes.
But she was too short.
“Over here!” the voice called again, she saw a hand waving.
It belonged to a tall man, wearing jeans and a plaid tee shirt. He had brown/gray hair and kind eyes and was wearing a smile.
“Hey there, Lindsay!” he greeted, taking one of her bags.
“Hi,” Lindsay said shyly. “I can take that, if you want me too”
“Nah. It’s ok! I’ll take ‘em. You’re the guest after all. So how was the flight over?” he insisted.
“It was good, thanks,” Lindsay responded and followed him to a big old rusty truck.
Mike guestered towards the front, “It would be really nice if you sat here but wheverer you’d like is fine,”
Lindsay sputtered, “Oh okay…”
“It’s just I got some hay and supplies from the tack shop in the back, I didn’t really think you’d want to sit there,” he smiled.
Lindsay shook her head, “No” she smiled back and climbed in.
When they were well on their way down a road, Mike began asking and blabbing away things at Lindsay.
Like, “How’s Christina?” or “How’s her riding coming along and Christina’s horses were” or “How’s school been going?”
Lindsay mainly just nodded and shortened her normal answers to just a few words.
They approached a stopsign and Uncle Mike turned to Lindsay, “You really ARE quiet, is anything wrong?” he asked gently.
Immediately she shook her head. “No Uncle Mike,” she said quickly.
He frowned.
“It’s just, uh, it’s just, I’m getting used to Kentucky. It’s a pretty place, you know. I’m just, I guess a bit shy,” Lindsay admitted, not wanting to mess up on her very first day to a ‘trip of a life time’
Mike nodded. “I see, yeah I’m sure you’ll like it. Did anyone tell you that you look so much like Christina?” he asked, driving on.
Lindsay giggled. “Yeah, lots of times! I feel really lucky too, sometimes,”
“That’s good. The last time I saw you, was actually when you were only 4 or 5 years old. A small little tot!” Mike went on.
“Really?” Lindsay asked, alarmed. She had only ever remembering seeing photo graphs of him.
“It was at your place though,” Mike added.
Lindsay shrugged and nodded. She had a vague memory but it was so long ago, she didn’t have a clear vision of it.
“We’re nearly there, I bet you’re getting tired,” he continued turning onto a dirt road.
Lindsay looked out the window. She had never seen a dirt road before, she’d seen a gravel road on the way to Christina’s farm but never a dirt one. Where she lived there was just paved. The houses were far apart too. In their small town the houses were only about 20 meters at the most apart. But in Kentucky the houses were like a mile apart with rolling green pastures. There weren’t any green pastures where Lindsay lived.
“We’re here!” Mike called out, swiveling onto a long driveway.
She noticed a big wooden sign with blue and white writing which read, “Whitebrook Farm. Owned by Ashleigh Griffin and Mike Reese.”
Lindsay was amazed that the place seemed so familiar. She’d seen it in so many of Christina’s photo graphs and all over their house were pictures of the various horses Christina had owned and all her friends.
It had large paddocks full of horses, a large farm house with a nice garden- although Lindsay didn’t know how they possibly could have time to garden with so many horses! There was also several large barns and trainning rings.
“Wow, this is a really big, nice place,” Lindsay complimented.
Mike smiled, “Thanks, Linds- I can call you Linds right?”
Lindsay nodded. “Of course,” she replied jumping out.
It was a beautifyl day. Lindsay couldn’t wait to explore the huge farm.
Then a happy, cheerful voice greeted them. “Hello, hello!” It declared. “Welcome Lindsay!” it belonged to Ashleigh.

Lindsay looked up. Ashleigh had brown hair and dark eyes and a big smile just like Mike, she was wearing blue jeans and a dark sweater covered in little bits of hay.
“Excuse the clothes, I just finished giving around the hay. Anyway welcome! How was the trip, here let me take your bags!” Ashleigh said smiling, giving Lindsay’s shoulder a squeeze. She took her bags, pointed to the door and gave Mike a quick hug.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
CHAPTER 2#
“Oh, I’m stuffed!” Mike declared, rubbing his belly after a delicious supper, made by Ashleigh.
Ashleigh smiled, “I knew you would be, sweetie,” she said giving his a big smile. “He always is,” Ashleigh said turning towards Lindsay.
“Yes, it was really great,” Lindsay added.
It had been! It had been barbecued chicken, a garden salad and potatoes as well as a delicious strawberry pie.
“Thank you, thank you very much! I’m so glad. Anyway Linds what shall it be? Going down to the barn? Taking a horse out for a spin?” Ashleigh began.
Arching her eye brow, Lindsay winced.
“Or would you like to settle in? Get unpacked- I didn’t realize that you may be tired!” Ashleigh exclaimed, noticing Lindsay’s expression.
“If that’s all right, I’ll take number 2 please,” Lindsay told her, after Ashleigh nodded, and Lindsay cleared her plate into the kitchen and loaded her things into the dish washer, like she was expected to do at home.
“Oh don’t worry about that!” Ashleigh said, coming in with her own dishes. “You’re very polite, I’m glad Christina brought you up well,” she winked. “Here let’s show you to your room.” Ashleigh quickly put her dishes away and lead the way down the hall and upstairs. She stopped at a large table full of photographs. “Here’s a table you may want to examine a little later, of all your relatives I bet you haven’t even heard of,”
Lindsay raised her eye brows. “Wow!” she managed, starring at all the faces in the photos. “I regonize some of them from mom’s album,”
“Really?! Well that’s cool. Maybe you’ll even get a chance to meet them soon!”
Lindsay nodded. “Hey, who’s that?” Lindsay asked suddenly pointing to a blonde haired middle-aged woman, standing beside a girl who looked not too much older then Lindsay. She was clutching a lead rope to a horse.
“Oh,” Ashleigh said, smiling. “That’s Christina’s cousin, Melanie and her daughter, Ally. Ally is only a year or two older then you are actually and that’s there lovely horse, such a sweetheart. And Ally is a great kid too, I’m sure you’d be friends,” Ashleigh paused and turned to face Lindsay.
“Cool,” Lindsay managed then followed Ashleigh to a big room.
It was large and empty feeling. It had a double bed, a dresser, a full length mirror and desk. The wall paper was very cool, Lindsay thought. They’re were a few framed photos of horses and rockstars.
“This was Melanie’s room. She was living with us for years, while her parents divorced. We thought the farm might be a nice change for her, from the big wild city and an accident she had when she was your age with a few ponies. You can choose to sleep here or,” Ashleigh stopped and then pointed to a smaller but cozy room, “Christina’s old room,” she finished.
“I think I’ll take Mom’s,” Lindsay finally decided. Her room at home was small but very stylish with lots of posters.
“Great, I’ll leave you to unpack. You can watch TV and use the computer but I’d perfer if you DID get some sleep!”
“I will!” Lindsay said happily. “Thank you and goodnight Grandma Ashleigh,”
Ashleigh laughed. “Good. Oh don’t call me grandma- it makes me feel like I’m old, which I’m not that old yet! Good night Lindsay!” she leaned over to give Lindsay a quick hug then went downstairs.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
After watching a bit of TV, emailing her friends and then changed into her pink and baby blue pajama bottoms and slipped on a large tee shirt which read, “Angel or Devil?” on the front and on the back, “You decide,” Lindsay tucked her clothes into the dresser and laid her pictures, books, magazines and makeup on the dresser. She turned off the TV and computer and flopped onto the bed. She starred at the blank ceiling then slowly fell asleep.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on

A stream of sunlight poured in through the glass window of Whitebrook’s Farm house shining on Lindsay’s young face. She rolled over and muttered, “What time is it?” into her pillow. Then she bolted up right. She wasn’t at home in the small town house but at a farm. Lindsay rubbed her eyes, sleepily and blinked several times. She was in Kentucky, she had forgotten! Lindsay looked around for a clock and found one which in bright red digits said read: 9:13am. She had sleepen in for a little later then at home on Sundays. Lindsay rose out of bed, and shoved her feet into bright pink fuzzy bunny slippers, Alyssa had given her a year or two ago to match her pj bottoms. She slipped on a house coat, she wasn’t at home so she didn’t want to just stroll into the kitchen like she’d just rolled out of bed- like it was done at home.
No one was in the kitchen when Lindsay arrived, just a box of cereal and a bowl of fruit and a note which said, “Hi Lindsay, we hope you had a good sleep. We’re going out to the barn now: it’s 7:10am right now,” Lindsay gasped at this. 7:10am was early! Even on school days she didn’t get up until at least 7:45!. Then Lindsay contiuned. “Hope to see you down. There’s cereal and fruit (and orange juice in the fridge) Love, Ashleigh and Mike.”
Lindsay put the note down and grabbed the bowl and munched for a bit, humming to herself a song she had heard recently.
“Oh, your up! We had thought you were dead!” Mike suddenly joked, coming in, slamming the door behind.
Lindsay looked shocked. “No,” she said looking up at him, head titled.
“Well,” Mike said suddenly. “Don’t just sit there, hon! Come on to the barn! We’ve got work to do!”
“So early?” Lindsay whispered. She admitediatly took it back. She didn’t want to be rude! “Sorry,” she apologzied. “It’s just at home the weekend is a time of sleeping in and relaxing that’s all, I guess it would be harder to do with” she began.
Mike lifted his hand. “I know. I know. I’ve forgotten. The farm is just my shedule. I wake up, I get dressed, I say good mornin’ to Ashleigh, I eat quickly, I go to the barn and don’t come back until lunch generally,” he said, sympathetically.
“Mel and Chris used to always want to sleep in too, I understand. But now that you’re up-“ he paused.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
A few minutes later, Lindsay was ready. She still had her ordinary facial things on. Just because she was going down to the barn, didn’t mean she didn’t wear it. Even for basketball and soccer tournaments she did. However Lindsay, when she went with her mom to the barn, she’d wear tattery jeans. Right now she had on those jeans, a faded shirt, a big hoodie that said ‘roxy’ and lipgloss. She sighed and followed Mike down the path, wondering what was going to happen!

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
CHAPTER 3#
“Where’s Ashleigh?” Lindsay wanted to know as she followed Mike down a path which someone had made by spreading gravel. It was a path, they used so frequently that gravel was on the grass and spread out all over the place. The path led the way right to the door of the big white barn.
“Who knows,” Mike replied. “Last time I saw her, she was working with a foal. But maybe now she’ll be turning a house out or somethin’”
Lindsay nodded. Clearly she and Christina were quite similar!
“So have you ridden before, dumb question but hey” Mike continued and he opened the door, leading Lindsay to a long hall with stalls on either side. Some horses, nickered as Mike and Lindsay came in.
Before she could answer him, he asked another question, “You been around horses a lot?”
Lindsay shook her head and Mike’s jaw dropped open.
“NEVER?” He nearly yelled, startling several horses.
Lindsay felt herself blush. “No, I have. Just not very much. Last time I rode was two or three years ago, Mom’s offered it; it’s just i don’t really got the time to and am,” Lindsay didn’t want to say but she knew it was true, afraid. “I;ve been to the barn with Mom lots of times but as I said haven’t gotten into it much”
Mike relaxed a little bit. “Good. But I still a little shocked. Yeah, Melanie hadn’t really had much experience with horses before she came here which was from the city, you know. Just like you! Christina loved it when she was your age. Which is 12? No 13 nearly 14 now, huh? Infact she had her own horse! Well never mind. Here at Whitebrook we love horses- they’re life pratically!”
Lindsay gulped but nodded. I’ll try, she told herself. She loved animals and all but horses WERE awfully big. I think I will, she said again to herself. I think I will try and maybe even like it! Lindsay loved new things!

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
Awhile later, Mike was showing Lindsay all over the barn. He showed her the tack room, where all the racing saddles and bridles were. He showed Lindsay that you could clean the tack using a sponge and some soap. He showed Lindsay the lounge where you could sit and have a break. In the lounge were stacks and stacks of magazines all of horses and ‘the racer’s time’ as well as another jockey catalogue. He showed Lindsay where they kept materials and the feeding room. He even introduced her to 3 stable hands which he explained were there to help because he was getting to old to manage the farm himself along with Ashleigh. He also showed Lindsay two of the three horses which were inside.
Mike told Lindsay that the one horse was a mistake. They had expected a gentle quarter horse to help train the young colts but had gotten ‘that one’
That one was a stallion, which Lindsay knew meant he wasn’t gelded. For one thing, Lindsay noticed was he was filthy and had caked mud attached to him. His hooves were too long and his eye was swollen.
“Whats his name?” Lindsay asked.
“Oh. I don’t suppose he got one, oddly enough. Poor thing. I don’t know why his life had to be ruined in such a way…”
“Ruined?”
“Yeah. And it usually ain’t the horse’s fault. Listen, Lindsay. I know its hard to believe but some people out there aren’t so nice. They don’t like animals, which is even more hard to believe. And sometimes they’ll just get so frustrated at the animal they just blow it. One bad accident and it remains with the horse forever.. That’s how smart horses are. It’s a shame but reality, sadly enough.”
“Awww…” Lindsay said sadly.
Then after a moment of silence, Mike and Lindsay went outside to look for Ashleigh, but were soon called back in.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
A lady in a fancy shirt and designer pants, which even Lindsay could tell were too much for the barn and a man, also dressed in expensive clothes were holding hands, walking through the aisle in their own land.
Lindsay wondered who they were.
“Hello. I’m Claire Brown and this is Jake,” she guestered towards the man. “Is this your farm?”
Mike starred at her. “Yes...I’m Mike Reese,” he too didn’t seem like he knew who they were either.
“Pleasure,” the lady told him and the man rested his hands on her shoulders.
They walked over to a horse named, Vanity’s stall. “Pretty mare,” the lady remarked. “Is she for sale?”
Mike walked up to them. “No she isn’t. She is one of our best racehorses and is definetly not for sale, Sorry. I don’t mean to be rude, but Whitebrook is a private farm and I don’t really know who you are,”
The lady only nodded and went onto the stallions stall. “Hi, pretty boy,” she cooed and before, Mike or Lindsay could stop her, the stallion barred his teeth at her and kicked the stall door, angrily.
Alarmed, the lady backed away into the man’s big arms. “Oh, feisty thing. Anyway, we’ve come because we’re interested in buying Whitebrook or whatever it’s called,” she batted her eye lids and put on her best smile.

Re: Lindsay Series #1 A light goes on
“Hi, Vanity,” Lindsay said, coming up to the gray mare’s stall, half an hour or so. She could hear Mike and Ashleigh still arguing with the young couple who insisted it was. Lindsay hadnt heard that it was for sale. But she was with her grandparents. Besides even if it was, she didn’t want it going to those snobby people.
The mare snorted, surprising Lindsay a bit. “Weird, I never knew horses snorted. Wonder what it means” She petted, Vanity.
“Hey,” a voice suddenly said, coming up behind her.
Lindsay whirled around. It wasn’t one of the stable hands as far as she was concerned, nor was it Ashleigh or Mike.
It was a guy, a year or two older then she.
“Hi,” she choked out, still surprised. He was very tall and muscular with sandy brown colored hair and nice eyes(and pretty cute)
“She’s pretty huh?” he said, trying to make conversation.
“Yeah…” Lindsay breathed out. She couldn’t help but smile. He seemed really nice.
“So, you from here or something?” he wondered.
Lindsay shook her head, “No, I’m not. I’m visiting for a while. Ashleigh and Mike,” she pointed to the door where they were still in.
“Cool,” he said. “The name’s Curt McLean. But call me Curtis.” he extended his hand.
“My name’s Lindsay. Lindsay Reese, Christina Reese’s daughter,” she took his hand. It was warm but he had a firm grip.
“Cool,” he repeated. “So do you wanna go from a walk or something?” he asked, smiling and petting Vanity.
“Sure, but not to far, k? I’m suppose to be helping!” Lindsay giggled.
Curtis nodded. “Okay? Want to give Vanity this carrot?” he pulled a long bulky carrot from his coat pocket.
Lindsay took it then called Vanity’s name. She held up the carrot.
“Here. You hold it like this,” Curtis told her, he put took the carrot in his outstretched hand after breaking it into two pieces. “Vanity,” he called, clucking his tounge. “There! You try now with this bit”
So, Lindsay did as she was told and gave it to the mare. She noticed, him watching her.
“What?” she demanded.
“Oh, it’s just you, you look good around horses,” he complimented.
Lindsay smiled. She knew she was going to begin to maybe like Whitebrook, a little at least- that is if it didn’t get sold.
