LOTR is in this category of course! But when it comes to good books, the first series that I read and couldnt put down was Jean M Auels "Earths Children" serious... Clan of the Cave Bear, Valley of Horses, Mammoth Hunters, Plains of passage and Shelters of Stone.

I started reading these in highschool
The should be rated R for graphics and detail but they were fantasic!
