History of Anarab & The Collection
In the year 305, the War in Genil began. At the time, the citizens of Anarab were made up of the nomadic raiders who ruled the deserts with an iron hand, and the outcasts of Genil; mainly made up of those found guilty in Genil courts of various crimes.
Majority of the raiders did not join the Nureesians in their war on Genil, but a couple hundred of the younger members did, eager to get their hands on riches or to make a name for themselves.
Most all of the citizens in the city however, wholeheartedly joined. Having had a long-lived hatred for Genil and its citizens. If asked, a lot of the ‘Narabs would also claim a desire for loot being their main reason, but because of the viciousness and cruelty committed during the war, people usually didn’t believe them. It was never a secret how much ‘Narabs hated the free thinking, light loving people of Genil. At the core of this hatred was plain, old-fashioned jealousy… but no ‘Narab would ever admit that out loud.
By the time the war ended in the year 306, Genil had been completely demolished, and what citizens hadn’t been killed or enslaved, had escaped into the forests and foothills surrounding the city.
With nothing to lay claim to, and preferring their own individual cities, the ‘Narabs and a handful of the Raiders returned to Anarab; the leaders regarded as heroes. However, by January of the year 308, these heroes had been mysteriously assassinated, and no one quite sure who was responsible.
But later that year, out of the slums of Anarab, a woman merely known as the Donia emerged; backed by some of Anarab’s most feared and skilled warriors, who were called The Collectors. Thus was born the Collection.
There were 3 Collectors under The Donia who ruled over all. But she mainly kept to the central and most prosperous section of Anarab, preferring to give the Collectors autonomy in their portions of the city. The Collectors were her most trusted partners and advisors. Each Collector was responsible for their sections of Anarab, and paid their dues to the Donia for her support.
Each Collector had their own band of Searchers: These men and woman pretty much enforced their Collector’s rules, and meted out punishments when needed. Under the Searchers were the Plebeians. These were mainly made up of street toughs and local businessmen and women. They provided services, collected dues, and backed up the Searchers when called upon. But mainly, they were the eyes and ears of the Searchers, and no one outside of the Collection knew they were Plebeians. This helped them to continually spy on visitors, newcomers, and their own fellow citizens.
When brought into the Collection, after much testing of their skills and their loyalty, whether they be a Searcher or a Plebeian; a person is branded with a special mark that only the Donia or one of the Collectors can bestow.
This mark is in its purest form, can be found somewhere on the body of the Donia. But additions to this pure mark are on each Collector, each in a different yet distinctive alteration. The Searchers and Plebeians bear their Collector's mark also, but with alterations to it again to mark them as Searchers or Plebeians.
Because of the fairy magic used to make these marks, they can never be faked. At every stronghold, and scattered all over the city are true bearers of the Mark of The Collectors. If any true bearer were to look at a fake mark, the fake mark would permanently sear and burn its bearer, forerver branding them as a spy.
And these would-be spies usually didn't live very long in the city of Anarab. Because if they weren't immediately caught and killed by a Searcher, then a citizen wanting to make a good profit, would have no qualms either capturing, killing, or ratting them out. No place in Anarab was safe for a spy. The Collection paid too well.
And now, in the year 311… The Collection completely ruled the entire city in Anarab. Despite not having control over the Raiders, the nomads depended on so much trade from the city to survive that they obeyed the Collection’s rules, and showed no disrespect, despite most of them scoffing at an organization led by a woman.
None would dare word anything out loud, but many a Raider dreamed of toppling the Donia, and then adding her to their harems, just to show her the proper place for a woman.
Many of these virile nomads dreamed of this possibility, especially that of enslaving the Collection’s leader. For it is said that she is one of rare beauty, despite a cold, dead heart.
But who can really trust rumors…?
