Gags to attend Stars Camp
GOALTENDER DEGAGNE TO ATTEND DALLAS STARS TRAINING CAMP
AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Gorillas set many new records last year, including its first ever trip to the Central Hockey League playoffs.
Another first for the Gorillas was announced today, Tuesday, Sept. 9 at a press conference at Joe’s Crabshack on I-40 and Soncy where it was revealed that goaltender Shawn Degagne will attend the Dallas Stars training camp later this week.
“I am excited to be going to this training camp and I hope to represent myself and the team well,” Degagne said. “I hope to learn from this experience. I was pretty pumped when Joe first told me and I couldn’t believe it. I have been hitting the gym pretty hard to get ready for the camp.”
Degagne will be one of four goaltenders and 56 players in total to attend the camp that will include stars such as Mike Modano as well as draft picks and other players in their system.
“To have Shawn going to the main camp in Dallas is a great compliment to our organization, hockey club and to how well Shawn played last season,” said Gorillas Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Joe Ferras. “ I am confident with Shawn’s ability that he will have a great camp and hopefully this will lead to great things down the line.”
The 24-year-old North Bay, Ontario Canada native will begin training camp with an orientation session at the new Dr. Pepper Ice Center in Frisco, Texas before taking part in team physicals the following day. On Friday, the Stars, will fly to Vail, Colorado where they will begin on-ice sessions and scrimmages
Degagne won games in bunches for the Gorillas last season, including five in a row near the beginning of the season and then eight of his last nine to close the year and get Amarillo to the post season for the first time in more than seven years.
“The way Gag’s played in the last 3 games of the season with the
pressure and being on the road were incredible,” said Ferras. “He definitely proved to myself and his teammates that he is an elite goalie at our level.”
Overall, the 6 foot, one-inch 190 pound puck stopper was 19-10-0 with a 2.52 Goals Against Average in 32 games. He was 4-0 in shootouts and allowed just five shootout goals against in those games and had three shutouts. In week 14 of the season, Degagne was selected as the CHL Goaltender-of-the-Week and was selected as the CHL Goaltender-of-the-Month.
"I think last year’s great season for both the Gorillas and myself had something to do with it,” Degagne said. “I hope to get a call up or two – maybe they will need me somewhere down the road hopefully in Utah.”
“ Gag’s winning record in his pro career has improved every season and the experience that he will receive in Dallas will make him an even better goalie and leader for the Gorillas,” said coach Ferras.
Amarillo Gorillas hockey fans will be able to follow on how Shawn Degagne is making out at the training camp with daily updates both on the website and through the local media.
