Description of this Course:

This one-year course will utilize the textbook Discovering French in addition to supplemental materials. There will be daily grades as well as weekly quizzes and unit tests. A student taking this course will be expected to put forth their best effort in the four areas of French Language: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students are also expected to complete a yearlong writing project in French.

Breakdown of your Grade:

        Your grade for each quarter will be determined as follows:

15%        Unit Tests
20%        Quizzes
20%        Portfolio
15%        Classwork
15%        Homework
15%        Participation

        Your grade for each semester will be determined as follows:

42.5%     1st/3rd Quarter Grade
42.5%     2nd/4th Quarter Grade

15.0%     Final Exam

5%    bonus (will be explained on reverse)



15% Unit Test:      

There will be no more than five thematic unit tests in the semester. Each one will be worth 100 points. These tests will also include the four aspects on language learning: reading, speaking, listening and writing. Students are expected to review for the tests (Review will also be done in class when time permits)


20% Quizzes:      

There will be weekly and sometimes daily quizzes. There will be different types of quizzes. Some of the types of quizzes that will be given are: spelling quizzes, film quizzes, lesson quizzes, culture quizzes, etc. Students will be allowed to use notes for certain quizzes and will be told when they can use their notes. However, please note: due to the number of quizzes given in a single semester, there will be no makeup of written quizzes. To help offset any problems that this may cause for some students, the four lowest quizzes (2 per quarter) will be dropped.

20% Portfolio Semester Project:
       
There will be a yearlong project. This project will be split into two parts. The first part will be due prior to Winter Break. The entire project (parts one and two) will be due in May. More information will be given out at a later date.

15% Classwork:       

Students will be expected to complete various work assignments given to them by this teacher. Each week, they may earn 30 points. Points are lost when students are found to be off task. They will be allowed to work within groups from time to time. Students are encouraged to ensure that their answers are correct since they may be used on “pop” quizzes.

15% Homework:      

Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. Students completing their homework on time may earn “euros.”

15% Participation:

Students are given 20 points a week for coming to class and completing all the work assigned. Points are lost for the following infractions: talking, leaving gum, trash on or around their desk, disrespectful behavior, breaking any of HHS rules for students. Students may buy back negative points with “euros.”

15% Final Exam:       

Final exams will be comprehensive and times will be announced at a later date. The final can last approximately up to 3 days.

A final exam is given EACH SEMESTER.

5% Bonus:       

Students participating in class will have the opportunity to earn “euros". Once each semester (or if announced earlier), the euros may be turned in for bonus points. Additional assignments may be offered for points from time to time. If a student earns 500 bonus points in a semester, then his/her grade will be raised by 5%. If the total is less than 500, then the student will earn a portion thereof. Please note there will be opportunities totaling over 600 points for a bonus. A student may choose those activities that best suit the student. He/She is not required do to ALL the activities.

BE HERE EVERYDAY. YOU CAN’T EARN POINTS IF YOU AREN’T HERE.

ALL CLASSROOM “COMMON SENSE” RULES APPLY (MAKEUP, FOOD, ETC.) DURING THE LAST FIVE MINUTES OF CLASS, STUDENTS WILL HELP CLEANUP THE ROOM

PAY ATTENTION. REMEMBER, IF YOU TALK WHEN IT IS NOT ALLOWED, THEN YOU LOSE POINTS.

READ A LITTLE AHEAD OF TIME TO PREPARE FOR QUIZZES AND TESTS.
