Foal's
Growl me and my friend are trying to help a mistreated foal *sad story really* to trust people agian well he isn't really mistreated it is when his mother died at birth his owner hated him because the mare was his first horse.
and he dosn't repsond to his lead training and he absolutely hates to be touched really it is my friend who need the help becuase i am busy with my own horse but if you guys have any suggestions i will love u ~!~
hmm well i suggest like any horse lover woud any monty roberts techniques lemma think
well dont start with touching the foal right a way have the foal gain your guyses trust by hanging arouns the stall maybe if the foal ses other horses trust you it should too stuff like that you could try approaching the foal not looking at it in the eye so as not to frighten or threaten him(her) you could offer the foal treats and hmm well i will trry to think of more stuff i know that aint relyhelpfil srys hmm hold out your hand for the foal to sniff and learn your scent um hum das dumm i can think right now so i am very slow tommorow i'll tell ya more
Can you touch him at all? I've been in a similiar situation- we had the colt in a large stall. I packed a lunch and spent the entire day sitting on a bucket in the middle of the stall with him. He had enough room to move away from me, but I was still very real to him.
I was still, quiet, and non-threatening. Curiosity overcame him. Let him touch you, not you to touch him. Blow back at him, talk softly throughout the day. This may take a couple times.
Re: Foals
For what it's worth, I've had a couple of very young foals in the same situation - and they require LOTS of time and patience, as they are "orphans"...it's best to use the above advice, use slow motions and soothing low tones. Try approaching him in a small enclosure like a stall rather than in a pasture and teach him that hands are for patting and praising. They always come around eventually; you just have to replace their "mother" in a gradual way. Seeing other horses respond to you without fear gradually seems to rub off as well. Patience and soothing voice generally work wonders, and the treats don't hurt! If you have the time, let his own curiosity get the best of him and approach you, as suggested, to check out what goodies you might be hiding for him.
But today i got to work with the foal and we decided to name him Troubled Cause lol dont ask and i worked with him for a while and i am like happy with todays performance i would Never even try or think about hurting Trouble but he actually let me groom him without a cocked ear *or a warning sign* also my partner gave me the same advice except she did it and he bit her but not me
