Dimebag Darrell
Hafta say, am shattered about the news on Dimebag Darrell and DamagePlan.
I have a photo in my office of Dime, from the '96 tour Pantera did in Australia - it's a pride and joy item, I did publicity for that tour in Adelaide and Perth. The guy was a legendary guitarist, and an inspiration to many.
The fact that an armed person can get into a gig AND get backstage, THEN onstage and shoot him dead at point blank range is just an abomination to me.
The rumours are flying. I've heard that Pat (the singer from DamagePlan) is also dead, the tour manager Chris died in Riverside Hospital, 2 audience members are dead (one of them may be from support band, Mayhem), and the guitar tech, Cat, was shot in the leg. I don't know what is true or not at the moment as I've heard about 20 variations on what happened.
To me, going to a gig is all about enjoying the music from the horses mouth, as it were, that makes it so unreal. The fact that guns and personal politics can become involved is really, really scary.
Apparently the guy that did the shooting was a huge Pantera fan and resented the fact that Dime and his brother Vinnie Paul had gone out on their own. He was heard shouting "What about Pantera? Phil needs his heroin money!" (Great).
To add insult to injury, I was watching the message board on the web last night - was about midnight here, and around 8am in the US and the Seppos were just waking up - there were all these hate messages like "hahaha Douche Bag's dead" and "Good shooting, way to get rid of a s.hit band". Added to that was people from the show saying they had ticket stubs, or clothing spattered with blood - that they were going to put on eBay!!!!!!! Jesus! Has the world gone mad?
So I've jumped on to have a vent.
I love my music. I love my bands. I can not understand the mentality of a fan/punter taking a life of a revered guitar legend out of.... I don't know... resentment? revenge? anger? contempt? What can possibly be the reasoning going through this poor fool's mind? I guess we'll never know as he was also shot dead by police...
So glad we live in Australia. Still scared s.hitless by the fact that we have such poor security at gigs and events - it would be so easy for something like this to happen here. Hopefully it never will.
RIP Dimebag and all who were murdered at this gig. Sympathy to all their families, friends and colleagues, and respect to those who tried to DO something to prevent this disgraceful occurence.
