Dean playing well at Grizzlies camp
JOHN DEAN PLAYING WELL AT UTAH GRIZZLIES CAMP

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Amarillo Gorillas forward John Dean is making a big impression at the Utah Grizzlies camp in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Don Mills Ontario native is one of eight players trying to earn a spot at the main camp for the American Hockey League squad. The Grizzlies are the Triple A affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars and the Montreal Canadiens.

Gorillas Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Joe Ferras says Dean is playing well according to the Grizzlies coaching staff.

Dean along with fellow Gorillas players Ryan Shannon and Henry Kuster were among 37 players who began camp last week.

During the 2001-2002 season, Dean had an enviable rookie debut with the Amarillo Rattlers of the Central Hockey League when he potted 17 goals and 16 assists for 33 points and 62 penalty minutes in 63 games.

The Utah Grizzlies are holding intrasquad games all week long and another evaluation will be carried out on Wednesday. Grizzlies officials say that potentially one or two players may be kept to attend the main camp, and a lot will depend on how many players the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens send to their squad.

“John has been very impressive and we liked the way he drove to the net and got involved in the play,” said Grizzlies Head Coach Don Hay. “We really like his speed and the way he goes to the net with the puck. We want to see if he can take his skills to the next level with more American Hockey League level players in camp.”

Hay was also impressed with Gorillas forward Henry Kuster and defenseman Ryan Shannon who were among 24 players sent back to their respective teams.

“Henry has some great offensive skills and he will score a lot of goals for your hockey club this year,” Hay added. “I coached against Ryan when I was in Kamloops and Ryan was with Calgary and it was great to see him at our camp.”

Other players in camp with Central Hockey League experience include Central Hockey League Jay Banach (formerly of the New Mexico Scorpions), and Blair Manning who was signed by the Oklahoma City Blazers.
