Captain k'alaa's Corner for February, 2006
Does the current crop of science fiction shows belong primarily to the younger generation?

In this fortieth anniversary of Star Trek, the second season of the new Doctor Who, and the release of the last segment of the Star Wars saga on DVD, we have a very active and interesting year in scifi entertainment coming up. Along with some of the most recent, new science fiction shows (both original and reworkings of older ones), it should be a very exciting year for everyone. But, as a person with children, I always wonder if entertainment in general and science fiction specifically is really aimed at younger viewers.

Of course, we have visual reason to believe that scifi is for everyone. And most science fiction books are too adult in theme for the typical juvenile reader. However, from what I have seen, in both advertising, time-slot scheduling, and reading about viewer habits, everything seems to be geared toward the 12 to 25's.

Many people may argue (justifiably), the largest audience for speculative fiction is the younger one. Not only in the US, but worldwide. Should the over 25's just move aside for the new trends, or should we be more vocal about our wants and interests? Does our buying power only extend to that money we spend on (or give to) our kids, or should producers, writers, directors, and even advertisers cater more to where the money is coming from?

We would be interested in your opinion on this subject. Do you feel science fiction is becoming too juvenile, or too adult? Do you feel the quality of shows are worse than they've ever been, better than they've ever been, or have you lost interest because most of them do not appeal to you? If you have an opinion on this subject, please write it and send it to us!
