CSI RULES THE RATINGS
*but we knew that, didn't we

The original entry in the sturdy CSI franchise maintains its primetime ratings reign

ANDREW RYAN

For a show that deals with dead people, the original CSI has never been more full of life.

Currently midway through its sixth season, the mothership of all procedural crime dramas has yet to show signs of wear. Since its inauspicious debut in 2000, CSI has evolved into one of the most successful shows in television history. CSI is the TV behemoth that begat two well-received spinoffs, CSI: Miami and CSI:NY, each with ratings rivaling the original. But the original CSI is the top of the TV food chain.

On most weeks, CSI is the most-watched program on U.S. primetime with an average of 26-million viewers and often higher. Last season's finale episode, directed by Quentin Tarantino, garnered close to 35-million viewers only a few million short of an Oscar-night audience.

The CSI numbers here likewise boggle: That same fifth-season finale on CTV earned 5.4-million viewers the highest-rated CSI outing in Canadian TV history. It's invariably the number-one show each week.

For better context: Two weeks ago, CSI drew 3,380,000 Canadian viewers on a Thursday night, according to Nielsen Media Research. Four days later, fewer people watched the combined CTV and CBC coverage of our federal election. It kinda makes you think, doesn't it?

And the original CSI is seemingly on all the time. The show airs in virtually every TV market in the world. It's the most-watched drama in second-run syndication and airs several times daily in most North American markets. The first five seasons of CSI are runaway hits on DVD; most stores are unable to keep sufficient quantities in stock.

To his credit, CSI creator Jeff Zuicker has refrained from tinkering. The graphic storytelling style remains unchanged from that first season, as does the primary cast. Crime lab boss Gil Grissom (William Petersen) is dour as ever, maybe even more so. His flame-haired counterpart Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) becomes better at her job, and more gorgeous, each year. Las Vegas police captain Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) is still rumpled and weary.

CSI is dependable television. The straightforward formula has drawn in a thinking viewership who by now have taken a personal investment in the show. There's still something to be said for reliability and CSI fans know they can tune in each week for their grisly forensics fix and receive a sharp murder-mystery in the process. In TV terms, CSI is simply great value.

Re: CSI RULES THE RATINGS
Well for last week, AI gave CSI a run for its money. But I think CSI managed to hold it own nevertheless:

Nielsen Media Research Top 20 Week of Feb. 27-March 5, 2006

Rank Program Name Network Day Time Rating Share Households
1 ACADEMY AWARDS(S) ABC 8:00PM Sun 23.1 35.0 25,405,000
2 AMERICAN IDOL-TUESDAY FOX 8:00PM Tue 17.0 25.0 18,682,000
3 CSI CBS 9:00PM Thu 16.9 25.018,670,000
4 AMERICAN IDOL-WEDNESDAY FOX 8:00PM Wed 16.6 26.0 18,320,000
5 AMERICAN IDOL THU SP-3/2(S) FOX 8:00PM Thu 15.2 23.0 16,799,000
6 WITHOUT A TRACE CBS 10:01PM Thu 13.1 21.0 14,488,000
7 CSI: MIAMI CBS 10:00PM Mon 11.8 18.0 13,016,000
8 OSCAR COUNTDOWN 2006 PT 2(S) ABC 7:30PM Sun 10.9 18.0 11,966,000
9 TWO AND A HALF MEN CBS 9:00PM Mon 10.8 16.0 11,882,000
10 LOST ABC 9:00PM Wed 9.9 15.0 10,859,000

Now I'm wondering how "I like to watch" would rate. Of course, AI is huge. Even Marg watches it! :lol Still CSI is the top Drama series on TV and that's great, considering it's in its 6th season.

If they'd just let Marg and Billy work their magic and let loose on screen their chemistry, CSI might just pip AI!

Wasn't Bo Bice from Alabama too? I absolutely loved him!!! This year though, there's no-one that can compare. Sigh.

Still, CSI is holding its own quite well. Better than any TV drama and that's quite a record, considering how long it's been at the top of the charts.
