Lardner, Degagne Earn CHL Weekly Honors
January 27, 2003 - Left winger Tab Lardner and Amarillo netminder Shawn Degagne have been selected as the Central Hockey League’s Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 15 of the CHL season after each respectively led their clubs to two wins in the past week. Lardner joins teammate Matt Barnes (3-time CHL Goaltender of the Week and November Goaltender of the Month winner) as Austin award recipients, while Degagne becomes the second Amarillo player to be honored, following rookie Derek Hahn’s selection as CHL Player of the Week in Week 12.
Lardner and his Ice Bats won home contests against El Paso (6-2) and San Angelo (5-1) this week, running their CHL-leading record to 33-6-1 on the season. The Edmonton native scored two goals and an assist in each game to lead Austin to consecutive victories. An outstanding two-way player, Lardner sits tied for third in the CHL with a plus/minus rating of +23, trailing only the +26 currently shared by Memphis teammates Don Parsons and Derek Landmesser.
The Amarillo Gorillas are in the midst of a season-long nine game stretch away from home, and behind outstanding play from Shawn Degagne, picked up back-to-back wins in Tulsa and Memphis. Against the division-leading Oilers on January 24th, Degagne picked up his first shutout of the season by making 30 saves in a 3-0 win. Following a 400-plus mile trip overnight to Memphis, Degagne was again nearly perfect in making 28 saves during the Gorillas 2-1 win over the defending champion RiverKings. Degagne’s pair of outstanding performances has not only helped Amarillo to the second best winning percentage in the CHL’s Northern Conference at .654, but has lowered his goals against average to 2.64 and his save % to .918.
