An Elder Pet - The Love of My Life.
January 22nd, 306

The wing that Olut had been prizing so much had kept Roy's attention, his smile unwavering as they each told the story to every entrant into their luxurious home. There had been nothing more prominent in young Roy's mind--not the war, not the woman he'd murdered in the forest after she followed him, just the emerald green hair of a vixen who stood for light though her wings were as black as the night sky. Beauty was her blade as it cut down my comrades, beauty was her lips as she gasped in that breath of air and released that scream of pain as Olut's handsome fingers wrenched from her head his prize... Beautiful--a black wolf dressed as a sheep among the flock that fought the wolves back to save her "family". Would they save her, in turn? He'd been so enthralled in everything, that the woman entering the home with her usual, haughty smile hadn't drawn his attention at all. Usually, he snapped up to greet her, to hear her stories as well, but right now--he'd a story that played a movie in his head he didn't want to stop.

And then, it was set down, a large bag in front of him, on the coffee table, his gray eyes focusing on it. "That's a big back.. you brought me a body?" Something like that, was all she replied, smiling as she swayed from the room, and Roy pulled the strings on the bag to stare into it with the wide-eyed wonder of a child at Christmastime. Inside, he thought a pelt.. he reached in, feeling the soft silver fur and the muscles beneath--no, it was a body! But a dog... he pulled the bag down, ecstatic to find that it still breathed. The silver of its fur was almost as beautiful as the gray of his eyes, and Roy prized his eyes. He ran his fingers through the fur, a smile and a giggle of glee jumping from him, "I LOVE HIM! I shall keep him! I shall.. call him something he wants to be called! When he wakes, I shall ask!" Roy placed his arms carefully beneath the wolf, rushing to his room to be alone with his new pet.

The look of distaste from his Lover and Sire did not distract him in the least. He settled the silver wolf upon the bed and wrapped him comfortably in silken sheets, "You are worthy to be crowned prince, you beautiful thing. Nature suits you so! You must like green!" He felt the dark, forest green of his silken sheets and then slipped around behind the animal--large, even for a wolf--but Roy lay down beside him and ran his fingers through his fur. "... It's a day for singing, Lads, when the men come home. It's a day for singing when our families are not far. A day for singing when you wake, a day for singing in the eve we make." He sung softly the made-up chorus over and over again, to be sure the beast woke to something friendly and calming.

Help, somebody! ... Mommy! ... Help us! No!

The voices began to swell in his head. Screams, cries, the sounds of the frightened children echoed inside of his skull, tearing at his heart.

Please..! Please...!

Where were they? The children...Why couldn't he see them? Couldn't smell them...Hadn't they just been behind him?

A scream tore through the chorus of voices, slowly followed by a small chuckle.

What a fine prize...

That's right. He had fallen; the enemy had caught him off guard and knocked him out. But where was he now?

Lerex's head began to throb; the screams and cries were tearing at him. His heart was pounded harder with every thought: It's my fault. My fault...the children...I-

...day for singing, Lads, when the men come home...

What was that?

He sniffed curiously. A new scent; something rather musty...but not rotten.

...when you wake, a day for...

His violet eyes slowly began to peel open. The world around him was blurry at first; the clashing blobs of color and light stung at first. Slowly they began to take shape, he began to feel a heaviness about him. A heaviness that wasn't his.

"...singing in the eve we make."

It was a boy. Lerex turned his silver head and stared, confused. The boy didn't seem to be a threat. He was definitely in no coffin or torture room; the only bindings around him seemed to be dark silken sheets. Who was this boy, what did he want?

Lerex continued to stare silently through canine eyes, bewildered and intrigued at once.

Roy watched as the eyes opened, his voice slowly drifting off as he stared at the beast as it looked about itself curiously, "You're awake, then, Boy?" He smiled, his brown hair falling around his face as he stared, those white teeth barely visible through his cautious smile, "Shall I call you a name?" He waited, calmly, pulling the first name that floated to the beast's mind, getting mostly static. Such a terrible vampire was he--Roy was only really good at being fast, none of the other things he was supposed to do. "Lerex. Familiar name, I think..." But he couldn't pinpoint it, after all, they didn't really know the Elders by name.

He rolled over, pulling from his body a shirt, and then crawling across the bed, pulling a piece of jerky from the drawer as he yanked it open, "Want something to chew on? I keep them for the taste... not much nutrition in 'em, but... I don't know about nourishment for a wolf. I've never had a pet before. But... I think I should refer to you more like.. a friend, yeah? You seem to be a proud thing.. your emotional colors are very vibrant for the average beast.. and you remember your name! You must be magical--" He broke the jerky, sticking the smaller bit in his own mouth to chew.

"We just came from raiding your city. I'm sorry, but you lost. If that means we can't be friends, I guess I understand, but you suffered from some pretty substantial broken bones and such--and you'll want to wait to be nursed healthy again at least." Roy sat up from the bed, his young teenage body moving around like a cat as he stalked about to his window, "You're in Nureese. The first city of vampires. It's a hard swallow, but full of the dead..." By that, the undertone sounded like he meant the soon-to-be. "A hateful place, but there are good people. It's not about where you live, but what you do with life, right?" He flopped back onto the bed, resting his cheeks on his hands as he stared at the dogs pretty eyes, his own dragging the violet into them.

His eyes widened a little, shocked that the boy had caught his name so easily. How was that possible?

Wait a moment. Those teeth. A...vampire? Lerex sniffed again; the boy needn't have said anything, the scent was clear to him now, he knew he was in Nureese. His fur bristled slightly as he began to scan for a door, certainly no good would come if anyone had found he was more than a wolf. He attempted to move some, slowly so as not to frighten anyone, but heavy pain shot throughout his body and forced out a sharp cry of surprise.

He bit his teeth together, shaking slightly until the pain subsided. Staying with the vampire lad wasn't particularly ideal, but no other choice was clear. Lerex set his head down and sniffed at the jerky and began to chew slowly, absently.

At least the boy, vampire or not, had not intent of hurting or killing him. All Lerex needed to do was maintain his wolf form until his bones had healed, by then he could surely make an escape. The only trouble was, he had never stayed in a shape shift for more than three days.

Lerex' eyes traveled back over to the boy. If this youth had managed to pull his name from his mine, surely more thoughts could be read. He turned his thoughts to simpler things now, instances of moments he'd had as a wolf. Running with his family dogs, stalking the woods back in Laerymre, being able to catch a girl by surprise...

He grinned slightly at that last thought then stopped cold, staring over at the young boy. Bad thought, bad. Move on, dog things, dog things...

Roy was not in his mind anymore, chewing on the jerky as he smiled in glee. He reached over and pet Lerex, sliding his fingers through that soft fur and dragging his nails ever-so-lightly over the skin beneath as he lay there, "My name's Roy. I came her from a hanging--did you come here from a hunter's lost bullet?" Roy didn't really want an answer, and therefore, didn't delve for one. Barely looking 14 now, one could only imagine how long he'd been here--and how young he must have been when he was hung. As young as nine, perhaps, if he'd been here very long.

He rushed his hands through his hair and smiled, "Daybreak, soon, and everyone here'll go to sleep... then I'll show you my favorite spot." He closed his eyes, settling into the silk of his green sheets as he lay there, but did not sleep. He merely enjoyed the feeling that it gave him--the familiar safety that sleep came with, knowing your family would keep you protected, even if they were already dead.

Roy kept one arm on Lerex, but mostly for comfort, of himself and the beast. He didn't like being alone, so the dog was happy company, since Olut was not friendly enough to have Roy in his "coffin" at day.. The fact of the matter was, Roy's bed held some soil from his burial ground, keeping him safe inside it, though no less endangered by the vampire hunters of the time.

A hanging? What had the boy--...Roy, what had Roy done to be hung? He was so young.

Lerex shut his eyes and did his best not to remember his own death. It had been so long since the demon child had struck him down, but no matter how long time stretched on he could still feel the burning. Not just of her assault against him, but of Ko's angry eyes as he blacked out.

His body still ached painfully. What had happened to his herbs? He bent his silver head down towards his chest and began to push his nose around the fur. Something cold touched his nose at last and he tugged it until it came free; a glass bottle tied around his neck by a strong vine. Slowly, Lerex began to edge the cork out in an attempt to release the pain-numbing herb.

Little by little, he could smell the herb. It was a powerful thing, dark purple in color. The scent alone began to relax his muscles a bit, even take his mind away from his own death. The cork came loose at last and he tipped the bottle up, shaking the herb leaf out and into his mouth. The taste was bitter and slightly vile, but after a moment's patience he could feel the soothing effects wash over him.

He set his head down and closed his eyes, quickly falling into a dead slumber. The medicinal herb could not be expected to completely repair his wounds by morning, but it would certainly make a great difference.
