A Word
(From A Word From The Founder for December, 2005 from the AMAFSR Newsletter)
Well, what a year 2005 has been for science fiction/fantasy movies and television! We've had the Star Wars saga finally coming to an end, with Revenge of the Sith this summer, we've had the return of The Dark Knight in Batman Begins (which I hear did quite well), then Fantastic Four exploded (or should that be popped) onto our cinema screens - and then just as quickly vanished - meanwhile, in TV land we've had the marvelous and fantastic return of Doctor Who, and the less marvelous and sad demise of Star Trek: Enterprise (just as it was getting really good, too). Lost successfully made itself a place with fans on both sides of the globe. Battlestar Galactica began a very welcome, exciting new season, while Stargate SG-1 refused to go gently into that good night, while its sister show, Stargate Atlantis continued to do whatever it does quite well. These are just some of the entertaining movies and television shows that interested me this year. I know there were many others I haven't mentioned, but my viewing time can only go so far, lol.
What do we have to look forward to in the future? Well, of course we have the exciting second series of Doctor Who, the possible Star Wars television series (though when that will appear is anyone's guess), but, the most exciting event coming up for me is the return of Superman in err... Superman Returns. This movie is said to be similar in style to the first three Christopher Reeve movies, so this bodes well for perhaps a future series of new Superman adventures.
Also this year, we have lost a number of actors and other important people who were there to create our science fiction universes. The biggest loss this year has undoubtably got to be James Doohan, known as Mr Scott or Scotty. Although his demise was not unexpected, it was still very sad to see our old friend go.
So as the new shows come nearer to being viewed, I raise a glass to those we've lost, those we've newly found, and those we've rediscovered, and say, Here's to ye, lads. Have a great year.
