Hi there, I'm 7 weeks pregnant and just starting this low carb way of eating, think I will be following Suzanne Somers WOE for the most part. Would love to hear from some other pregnant women and how this WOE is going for you. Charlene

I thought this would be a busy website! Just two of us? Anyway, congrats on your pregnancy! I just found out two nights ago that I'm going on five weeks (conception 1/25; last period 1/4). Wow! I've been on Atkins since last summer and now I'm wondering what I should do to adjust. I've had two other pregnancies in the last five years; both with the help of Pergonal and both ending with severe pre-eclampsia. I'm in shock right now that I conceived with no assistance; however, now I need to figure out how to have a healthy pregnancy. Ideas? Suggestions? Comments about vitamin and diet adjustments will be appreciated! Teresa

Hi all, I'm 5 months (21 weeks) pregnant with my second baby. I did low carb the first two trimesters with my first baby without any problem and my OB/GYN supports this WOE. This time I was no low carb for the first trimester and she insisted I go back on Induction for the rest of the pregnancy as I was not doing well with all the insulin. So I am back now and feel much better (after carb withdrawal). I can refer you all to the Yahoo Group called PregnantAtkids. They are great and can help you customise your WOE for your pregnancy. But just to give you some food for thought. Eskimoes have babies all year round and many of them are conceived and born during the winter when all there is for them to eat is meat. They obviously develop in a ketotic state and are born and seem to develop normally. If there were any real problems with being in ketosis while pregnant I think that we'd see some problems with Eskimoe babies and that just isn't the case. Considering my OB/GYN recommends it and says all you need is just a little carbs from either fruit or veggies, I'd go ahead and just keep on like you have been. Hope this helps. SugarBane

Hi guys. I'm fairly new to low carbing, but I did read Dr. Atkins' site pretty carefully. In case you didn't know, he said the only safe way to low-carb during pregnancy is with the Lifetime Maintenance program - and he says not to do Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, or Pre-Maintenance. To quote: "The weight-loss phases of the Atkins approach are not appropriate for pregnant women and nursing mothers. The Lifetime Maintenance phase, however, is perfectly safe." Also, I once read an article about how ketones in the mother's blood stream can cause brain damage to the fetus. This is why doctors are very strict even with obese women not to lose weight during pregnancy. So if you do low-carb, be very careful not to go into ketosis, and don't try to lose weight. I'm just posting this because I care. Good luck with your pregnancies! --Triplets R Us

Hi, I am only about nine weeks pregnant with my third but I am already starting to be concerned about the numbers on that scale. I keep telling myself not to worry about it but the truth is it is a lot easier for me to not gain a lot than it is for me to take off a lot of weight. With my previous two children I gained 27 and 30 pounds and took it off relatively easily. This time I am a bit older, I'm 36, and it has been a little more difficult each time to take the weight off. I really appreciate the comments on this site. I would like to know what WOE stands for. I'm not familiar with the sommers book. Also, thak you to the lady that wrote in about the Atkins program. I will check out the maintainence part. It's all about taking care of this baby and at the same time taking care of myself. Cause "if mamma ain't happy, ain't no body happy."

Currently I'm trying to conceive my 4th child. I'm a little worried about gaining too much weight this time. I've given some thought to going low carb during the pregnancy. I've read that Sugar Busters and The Zone are two safe WOE (ways of eating). I'll send another note when I'm blessed with the future pregnancy and eating low carb!!! Good Luck to all

I just gotta say i think your silly if you wanna start a low carb diet when youve just found out your pregnant! Apart from the lack of energy you will feel from it on top of extreme tiredness you will experience whilst pregnant, theres nothing that can take the place of an balanced healthy diet, with everything in moderation. It may be different if you were already trying this diet but the first few months are vital and your baby needs everything to grow efficiently in the first trimester, when everything from miscarriage to nural tube defects and the like are at high risk!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys Chosing a low carb WOE is NOT STUPID. Our modern society is awash with diabetic children and adults alike. That is STUPID. The key is choosing a diet to sustain your health and that of your baby. Have a look at the ZONE diet. It is fantastic. We have to gain weight during pregnancy, so we have to up our intake of food. So it is sooo important what we feed ourselves. The Zone emphasises a large content of protein (especially fish) accompanied by quality carbohydrates (mostly green leafy vegetables) and good quality oils and fats (such as nuts, olive oil, avocado etc). I am 8 weeks now, and totally convinced that a diet that cuts simple carbs is the way to go. I am going to continue eating this way. I'll ditch the sugar, rice, pasta, bread and potatos. I find it so funny that people still preach these as good sources of enegery. Yeh, if you're an athlete, otherwise, for the rest of us it's just like eating lollies. Anyway, that's my two cents. I agree that we must have a balanced and nutritious diet through pregnancy. I just don't think we EVER need that carb crap in our diets at all. Cheers Deb

I would be very careful doing a low carb diet while pregnant. I have no problems with Atkins or any of these other diets as i have been on Atkins twice before and will probably do it again after pregnancy. But while a baby is developing it needs a wide spectrum of foods including carbs to develope properly. I would do some serious research before risking such a diet. I also recall reading in the Atkins book somewhere that the diet was appropriate for pregnant woman. You will have lots of time after your pregnancy to work on you diet i don't think it's worth the risk. Be careful, you not just thinking for yourself right now.
