12/22/02 - Royal Oak Music Theater - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
Well, we have taken a nice long break for the holidays but now we're back. On behalf of the rest of the fellas, I would like to wish everyone the happiest of New Years! I personally spent my New Years Eve with some of my closest friends in Chicago, and it was a very nice time. It didn't exactly feel like New Years from what I remember, but oh well (I have a few pictures to remind me). While in Chicago I was able to check out an Ari Hest show at Schubas, and I am looking forward to the couple shows we already have scheduled with him this year. I am very excited for what is to come for the band this year. Last year we had one of our most productive years in our short 2.5 year band lifetime, and we hope to maintain, and maybe exceed, the pace we set for ourselves last year into this new year. Thanks to everyone that has supported us thus far. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger and we couldn't do it without you. Now, let's see if I can recap our last show:
12/22/02 - Royal Oak Music Theater (Royal Oak, MI) -
Well, a couple days before Christmas and it was time once again for our Holiday Show. This year marked the third consecutive year for this show in the Detroit area. Last year the show sold out within a few hours of doors opening and we had a blast. This year, the sellout didn't quite happen (possibly considering we played a 1,700 capacity venue). A good crowd came out, but it seemed a little sparse in such a massive theatre. Unfortunately for us, the Royal Oak Music Theater is a very accommodating venue with plenty of tiers on the main floor scattered with tables and seating. This lazy (probably hungover) Sunday night crowd took full advantage of the seating, so the group of fans in front of the stage was a bit lacking in size and energy. We hoped the fans in the farther back tiers of the mainfloor could have joined in for a whole new level of energy. Can't complain though, they came out to the show to support us and they were loud (we just couldn't see them with the bright lights on us). With that said, now on to the stronger positives. The set we performed tonight was probably one of our strongest batch of songs we have ever played in a set. With a large percentage of the second half of the year's heavy touring being opening for and supporting other bands, we found it more difficult to loosen up and have fun with the new covers, slower songs, and lengthy jams. We added a couple new covers to the repretoir, such as a jammed out verion of Phish's "Character Zero", and Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker". The set also included two new upbeat songs never played before, "9:30" and "Aways Been On the Move". Both came off pretty strong and we were happy with the response. However, being the perfectionists that we are, we believe they could use a little polishing. As for the old songs, we had a little variation in the set with the rest of the guys leaving the stage towards the later third of the set, as I was left on stage alone to play "On the Weekend," as well as a couple verses of "Never Say Goodbye." The guys joined me once again to cap it off with the extended, jammed-out end. We have really started to enjoy playing that song, and probably will more. All in all, not a bad night, and we really appreciate all the people that came out to support us, especially those on the main floor who were dancing and singing along. Next time, come party with us at the front of the stage and a have a blast; you'll see that the music just gets so much better A special thanks to Tricia Concepcion who came out to open the show on short notice and play an impressive set. A very special thanks to our pals Changes who joined us for the second year in a row and played a fiery set, helping make it a great show.
